Did You Go Shooting Today

Now for the fun part...

Video it for @BigWaylon ;)

Went to the range to shoot a jump to lands test that I loaded Saturday. Beautiful day, had the wife's blessing too. What could be better?

For starters you could remember to put the test ammo in the car before you go. Fortunately I had a box that I put in for fouling since I cleaned the barrel to measure distance to lands. Then went and played pistol for a couple of hours.

Forgot my ammo, but at 60+ degrees in January, partly sunny, and buddies at the range to remind you how old you must be getting, and pondering when it would be that I would forget the rifle. Even had time to watch a girl (maybe 7) learning to shoot from her father. Good stuff.

That I did! Had to zero an AR I rebarreled.

My neighbor came with (identity blurred to protect identity...did I go overboard? [emoji12]) and wanted to zero a rifle he acquired. An old Mauser rebarreled in 250 Savage. Check out that old J Unertl scope! The reticle is fixed and the WHOLE SCOPE MOVES when you dial the turrets. It also SLIDES fore and aft with a return spring to presumably absorb recoil? Eye relief was like .5”.. Probably nothing new to some of you old codgers here [emoji16] but totally new to me. Turns out it wouldn’t even chamber a round so he has more figuring out to do...

Who rebarreled his rifle? Did they check with Go/No Go gauges? Sounds like headspace was set right.

Went to FLD yesterday with a couple of friends, including @Bullseye Baldee . We had a good time, it was a great day.

First up for me was my 30-30, shooting three different loads. The loads with coated or plated bullets were hitting way low @ 50 yards and not very accurate (which I expected). They are mainly for making noise at the local indoor 25 yard range. My load with Hornady bullets hit slightly high and grouped much better. I still need to get a rear peep sight for the Win 94, the normal buckhorn rear sight just isn't working well with my vision.

Then I pulled out my precision AR. I had modified a 10 round P-mag so I could seat bullets longer than normal, since that gun has a really long jump-to-lands. I loaded some at 2.330" (normal max is 2.260"), and was making 1 hole 5 shots groups @ 50 yards. I was mainly just checking for operation to see if there were any reliability issues, which there were none, so overall I was very happy. I'll go back out sometime later to check for accuracy at 100 yards and beyond. Lastly, I adjusted my offset BUIS and got them dialed in.

@Bullseye Baldee and my other friend were busy lobbing some 45/70 down range. BB was doing some accuracy testing with his Sharps replica. Always looking for a better grouping, and sub 5fps standard deviations. He still thinks he is eventually going to hit steel @ 1000 yards. I think he is still waiting for a surplus mortar mount with a vernier sight to show up on Craigslist. My other friend is not a reloader, so BB kept egging him to shoot more 45/70 since he needs the brass. His shoulder just couldn't take it, though. We did get the front sight drifted on his rifle to get the windage right, though.

Since the 500 and 1000 yard lines were busy, we ended by going to the pistol steel bay. I let my friends shoot the 460, that has sorta become a tradition with us. Always an attention getter, too! I also shot a S&W 625 and 1911, about 50 rounds each.

Since we didn't eat lunch, we stopped at the Remington Grill in Louisburg on the way back and got a bite to eat. Great day with good friends.

I did....and I got to see fire shoot out of the end of my gun for the first time! I have no idea why I'd see it now, when I've been at this for a while, but it was very cool! LOL. Maybe the new ammo I had? Would that make a difference?
Anyway, since my shooting was rather mediocre today, it was at least nice to have the fire to look at.

Went to go shoot some steel targets at 136m in the snow and fog. 0/5 firing? Seems the firing pin tip broke :( Know where there is a bubbed 1917 here but firing pins are different between the two.

After Sunday's range time, I can confirm I need more dry practice. My El Prez time ranged from 10 to 11 seconds, with around a 1.25 draw from strong side no cover garment.

Went Tuesday to find zero with new sights. Too freaking windy down there to keep a target up long enough to get some shots on it so I settled for shooting at steel.
Left/Right seemed good but as far as elevation is concerned it was all over the place. Couldn't figure out a pattern at all.
Then I got stoopid and decided was gonna work on movement. In a matter of minutes i was on my back looking at the sky. Okay that's enuff for today.

Mrs. Toprudder and I went to TSA today. Except for a couple magazines of 9mm, all we shot were 22. She had her Ruger SR22 and I had my Heritage revolver. I was using up some crap Aguila ammo (smells like Super Glue when fired). The fingers on my left hand turn black when I shoot this gun, from all the GSR I rub off the cylinder when rotating it to extract and load.

Shot my new Ruger Mk III, SW 27, and the not much liked CZ 75 BD. Also my Remington Speedmaster .22 and Rossi 92 .357. Still recovering from rotator cuff surgery in May and my strength is not where it used to be. Besides my shoulder aching when shooting I'm not strong enough to hold a firearm for any length of time without shaking. It is amazing how much muscle tone was lost after not shooting for 7 months even after extensive PT and doing home strengthening exercises.

Western North Carolina is the bomb. Rain, rain, rain, snow, rain, rain, rain, sleet, rain. Ice and slush yesterday and today. New steel targets will remain pristine much longer. When will it end?

Yes Sir!! 9 total visitors today! Garvin, Geezer, Jerry Lundy, and I braved the cold North wind and 45 degree day long enough to shoot off the porch with my 1911 22 mag and my KelTec 9mm carbine. That thing is Strange to get used to....Hashknife spent the night in the Bunk House and has made it home safely. See ya'll Soon!

Would have liked to go shooting today, but the water is to deep even for fish! This rain is nuts

Enlighten me.

I did...100 rounds only, as it was too cold even for me to handle! 35* is my lower limit, I guess!
Good training day, there is no guarantee that the weather will be comfortable should you need to defend yourself,
reloading a cold gun with cold ammo bare handed is an eye opener.

Yeah, it was interesting...lol. And a little cold isn't going to stop me from going to the range!

PRICELESS. Glad you had some quality time with your grandson.
By the looks of that big smile he is HOOKED.

We had the 9 yo granddaughter there too. Both kids shot very well. We also played with a Zenith MP5 clone with a binary trigger some AR's and lots of handguns.

Snow is melting, temps in upper 40s today, muddy out, troops on the range so only did one 30 rd mag of double taps. Winter storm forecasted in another few days.
