Mine has been giving me some fits by not installing the primers correctly. Sometimes they are upside down or sideways. I noticed that if I cycle the handle, I hear a loud snapping sound and its coming from the primer install station. It appears that the timing isn't correct for the rotating shell holder to match up with the primer installer. The snapping sound is the shell holder moving just a bit lineing up with the primer station, thus kicking the primers upside down or sideways..This has just started doing this, Im sure there is a Squaredeal guru out there that has had this happen to them..

Make sure you shell plate hasn’t loosened up. That’s all I can think of.

In addition to checking the shell plate I’d take the primer system apart and clean it keeping an eye out for anything off. I can’t tell when the plastic tip on the primer tube is worn out, but sometimes you change it and all is good again.

I've had both the shell plate loosen and problems with the primer tip. Remove the shell plate and clean underneath it then re-install. Replace the primer tip - it's cheap.

The cup that picks up the primers from the primer feed tube is to be a certain height. I don't remember exactly what that is. Make sure the knurled nut on top of the primer feed tube is finget tight and that the inner feed tube is a lined up properly at the bottom where the primer cup picks up the primers. I would call Dillon customer service they are extremely helpful and knowledgeable

Try the simplest first: make sure the primer system is clean. After about 3,000 rounds on my Dillon 550B I have similar symptoms with misfeeds and the primer bar snapping. My issue is carbon and crud accumulated from deprimed brass.

I, too, had some similar issues. Was the blue plastic tip of inner primer tube broken up. Was quite easy to take open and replace.

@Slappy McTrigger @Slacker

Might have some ideas.

Mine was a quite dirty. I basically run it like I do my cars, guns, and horses.

Abuse it till it stops working.

The maximum distance from the top of the primer cup to the bottom of the primer transfer bar should be 1.410 inch. That information is from Dillon tech support. Remove the primer feed tube and examine that blue piece for Bends20190414_130123.jpg 20190414_125400.jpg cracks or dirt. Also make sure the white plastic Rod moves in and out freely.

As others have stated clean the shellplate & tighten it then replace the primer feeder tube tip and clean the tube itself. I can't stress how important cleaning the tube is, use rubbing alcohol and some Q-tips, you'll be shocked.

Another improvement is replacing the indexing ball bearing with a polymer one, this makes the indexing of the shellplate much less "snappy". Ballistic Tools sell a 3 pack of Delrin detent balls for a dollar.

I also ground a slight bevel along the edges of the indexing holes to ease the ball bearing into position.

Thanks for this tip. Might try these.

Really want to thank you for taking the time to take the photos and a really good explanation of the dimensions. I was able to take mine apart tonight and its seems to set at the correct height..After running it thru few cycles, it appears that the priming cup is raising before the shell plate has completed its turn or cycle. Then as it snaps into place, it flips the primer sideways or upside down..Everything is clean and the loader has low rounds thru it so its not like its worn out. Think a call Into Dillion is in order. Thanks for the all the time you spent taking the pics and measurements.. This site is awesome due to folks like you..

If your loader is newish lower the handle to raise the ram. On the handle side of the ram I believe that you’ll see a screw head. That screw somehow adjusts the amount of travel for the shell plate. Mine doesn’t have one, so while I could make a suggestion it probably wouldn’t be very helpful. Just something to look for before you get Dillon on the phone.

Glad I could help you out Paul it was my pleasure. I had my press out cuz I was reloading and wanted do a little cleaning of that primer tube so while everything was a part it was very easy to just take some pics. There may be some crud where the indexer Pawl and arm move the shell plate .it is right under where the bullets are seated and I've had a lot of lead shavings wind up in that area (see pic) 20190416_112402.jpg this could keep that arm from moving the shell plate smoothly. It might be a good idea to have your shell plate removed when you call Dillon so you can see what they describe what to look for. As Ben Franklin said "we must all hang together ..."

Well. isn't this something.. I don't need to call Dillion, I just need to contact Member Bahamadon.. Once again, you nailed it.. Under shell plate ,there was a lot of bullet lube or waxy stuff from the cast bullets I use, even some walnut shell grit ? Cleaned it all out,, runs slick as can be now.. Only have a few more hundred cast heads to load up, then Im switching to the coated heads. Should help to reduce this problem. Once again, Your the Man! Thank you very much ...

Glad to be of assistance Lager. I've had my square deal for 30 years so I've been around the block with it a couple of times. I'm not that smart but I've just had a lot of experience with it. You can certainly contact me whenever you want but the Dillon people are much smarter than I am and I don't have any free replacement parts to send you
