Diy paint dipping??

Has anyone ever done this? From the vids I have watched all you do is put water in a bucket, spray paint on to the water and put your part into it. But it does not work that simple because I have tried but the paint will not swirl.

What is the real process? And good vids I should watch? Thanks

Suminagashi printing is something similar using ink. Maybe it could give you some direction. Just looked through a thread on doing it with leather that had some great results. I would think you would want something thicker than spray paint though.
