i got a vortex venom today for my pistol and at arms length it's not a perfect dot. It's blurry. However if I move it closer to my eye (like it would be on my rifle) it's perfectly sharp. Do I need to see the eye doc?

Do you have trouble doing every day things? If no then skip dr. If yes go to dr. I have a slight astigmatism and see the blur. I have found though if I concentrate on the target the dot gets rounder. So I shoot threat focused when using red dots.

The important question is how long has it been since your last eye exam?
If it is over two years you are overdue for the exam, not just a vision check but
retina and glaucoma too.

Astigmatism usually causes vision to be blurred or distorted to some degree at all distances.

^^^^This.

You only got two. Got to take of them. I am diabetic. Eyes get checked every year. If you have insurance it's crazy not to. One year there was no changes. I had them make me a pair of prescription sun glasses.

Here's my story.... Knew my eyesight was becoming an issue, blurry red dots, skeet targets that all I could see was a blur, got tired of my declining skeet scores. Never had an eye exam, go to the ophthalmologist he diagnosis my eyesight, nothing unusual, I tell him I only want contacts. He obliges and I walk out a man with a new outlook on life.
Fast forward 12 months and I suddenly have this astigmatism in my right eye, no problem, he changes my prescription and all is well again. I'm due to go back in August of this year and I don't think there are any changes so I should be good to go...
Success story...... Call the man, please call the man.....

Bailey did you bring in a red dot with you for your exam? I didn't for mine and I still see a blur on the red dots even though my eyesight is greatly improved otherwise with my new glasses. I'm thinking I should go back and bring a cheap red dot with me.

Most of my red dot sights are "lesser priced" (cheap) and their not all that important to me. What was important was the distance vision I came away with. Skeet targets are seen at 21 yards (63 feet) and that was my main goal, to see the target better and more clearly. Since I didn't want progressive contacts my single vision lenses improved my distance vision greatly and my skeet scores are back where they were years ago. I am back to AAA (98.9) in all 4 gauges and man it feels good......
You're going to get either distance, close up or progressives. My glasses are progressive and they give me fits....

For reference, I'm only 33.

I went to site in my dot today & it got a lot more focused as I looked through the site and focused on the target.

But I think I will make a doc appt just in case. I have no other vision problems, but an appointment can't hurt.

I have a pretty bad astigmatism. To the point I cannot shoot a red dot scope at all. It's like a 4 leaf clover if I'm lucky or an ink blot test if I'm not. But I don't have any issue with holographic sites. Go figure.

Hux, don't be surprised if it's not correctable right now. I went several years with a low grade astigmatism that I could not do anything about. There were not prescriptions in the lower ranges. I was actually kind of happy when it got bad enough to correct.

I didn’t know it until a while ago when I read that this classic symptom of astigmatism. Reflex (I think) vs holographic. Search the forums and you’ll find a discussion or 2 about it. I have slight astigmatism but no problem with red dots - lucky. I have a pair of glasses in my car that I only use when the perfect rain/night/light/glare situation exists and occasionally when driving late at night long distance when I’ve been up forever. Makes s big difference of how tired my eyes feel or don’t!
