..like with a shell or pocket knife after you make adjustments?

One of the guys I hunt with does that.......I don't know if it helps or not. I would think it doesn't, but it cant hurt........

Apparently it's mandatory for ACOGs because of the prism thingy on springs . Not sure it's needed for regular scopes.

My dad does that. That’s how he taught me to do it. I don’t do it now, though.
I think it’s an old timers thing. Old wives tale or something.

In the generation of scopes available before most of you were born it was a common practice the "settle" the adjustment you just made. Same reasoning behind the "4 past and 2 back" theory. The scopes that most of us could afford were of good quality but ever now and again you'd get one that needed a little help.

Modern machining and the advent of precision machinery make the scopes of today so far removed quality wise that they aren't even in the same class...

I used to do the tap or go 2 over and 2 back for the same reasons @Bailey Boat said.

Firing the rifle produces 5,000-10,000 Gs of acceleration. You can’t duplicate that by tapping on the scope, unless you do it with a small hammer.

I usually assume the turret threads are right-handed. When dialing against the spring (i.e., clockwise), I stop at the desired click value. When dialing with the spring (i.e., counter-clockwise) I dial past the desired click value two clicks, then dial back two clicks. On a good scope this is unnecessary, but it doesn’t hurt.

Yup "tap tap" with pocket knife. Its how I was taught 30 some years ago and I see no need change it now. I don't figure it hurts anything, may not help either but it's part of my routine.

2 clicks past 2 clicks back, tap tap, old habits die hard.

IMHO, Semi-modern or modern scopes should not need tapping.
Sometimes I will run past my planned turret adjustment and back especially if the scope in question was not close to mechanical center.

Worst case, Yes I will tap the scope in question with a .30 Cal.
