I'm in the middle of changing the timing belt and water pump on my 95 3.4l Tacoma. I need a 3/8" elbow extension so I can remove the tensioner. It seems that these extensions have been replaced with the U joint type. This isn't working for me, but I also blame the 12 point socket. A 6 pt would work better.

I use a box wrench with the pipe from my floor jack
On my '99 Ford 3.0 Taurus. Crowfoot wrenches also work.

Have never seen one in the wild, haven’t been looking.

Can you not just put the ratchet or pull bar itself in the tensioner?

As a 36 year professional mechanic with a pants load of tools, I don’t know what you’re looking for. Google didn’t help either.

It's apparent I should mechanic, then drink. Not the other way around.

I just looked at the video again and I have the extention I need, I just need a six point socket instead of a 12pt.

I think my problem is I had this piece in my mind looking a certain way, but in reality, it was one way the whole time.

:(

12pt sockets are dumb, they should probably only exist in 10mm, 12mm, 1/2", and 5/8" and only those because manufacturers insist on 12pt fasteners.

They exist in 3/8” so snap on can sell sets to dummies. I was one of those dummies, and almost all of the 12pt look brand new.

I only use 12 point if I don't have a 6 point.

Or maybe if I need to use a breaker bar in a limited-swing area and I just can't get a 6 point oriented to fit in the limited room I have to work with.

This is why I think we have 12pt sockets, from the days before ratchets when you had to get a slider properly oriented. Just a guess.

Might be but a 12pt and a pull bar is a good recipe for teaching the kids to cuss, busted knuckles, and A quick lession in how to get a rounded bolt out. Been there before.

You CAN get just about any orientation in tight spaces with a 6 point...just pop the socket off and rotate it a quarter turn atva time 'til you've got what you need, then pop it back on.

I had a 6pt socket, but it was the deep socket style. I needed a shorty. I added a set to my collection and finally found the motivation to crawl back under that truck. Success! I got the bolt out.

Now, if I can just get that danged timing belt on. I swear it seems like the thing is one spline too short. And this 90° weather ain't helping matters at all.
