Pretty sure my dog tore her ACL. She’s been on paid meds and an anti inflammatory for the last week. I have to take her back to the vet this coming Friday for X rays. Currently trying to price it out and see what vets people recommend. She’s a 6.5yr old lab mix and 62lbs. I’m by the charlotte motor speedway but willing to travel for the right vet.

This happened to my 9yo Rottie a couple years ago. We couldn’t justify the $3,000+ surgery. She limps off she runs for more than a bit, I keep her from jumping up. She seems in quite high spirits. The vet told me arthritis would set in quickly without the surgery.
My breeder lives in Charlotte & uses a vet in Sanford.

My wife used this group to surgerize her Dobie's ears.

She was pleased with the Dr's work.

Same thing happened my 90 lb mutt back a few months ago..Vet told me $5K or just let it go and he will limp most days and try to keep him from getting to excited and run/jump. Well, that kind of money was out of the question and hes getting along quite nicely. Limps some days and some day no , does not seem to bother him at all. Vet told me to give him Glucosamine and that would help. I'm on it to, so he gets a pill a day and so do I. Hope this helps. You know we try to do the best we can for our pets and faced with a high dollar repair bill sometimes we feel guilty for not spending the money. If you have yourself a butt ton of money and want to make yourself feel better, then spend it. I know I don't, hell I limp and cant afford to fix that . LOL My dog is doing just fine, he isn't a working dog so all he does is keeps the neighbors at bay by barking at them when they get to close, lays around the house and does dog things. My dog still has a good life even tho he limps sometimes.

Can’t speak to ACL surgery, but this place has handled our current pup since birth (4+ years) and handled the last several years of the previous dog.

Right on the Meck/Cabarrus line near Highland Creek.

Been there twice..... the same leg on two different pup. Both were about 5 years old. First time (2005 or so) was about $1200 total (initial visit, xrays, surgery, overnight stay). This time (late last year) was closer to $1800....

Our first pup recovered well and had a great life (16 years) without any trouble from her repaired leg.
Our second generation pup had his about 6 months ago and is doing good so far. Before he couldn't take an easy walk (20 minutes or so) without limping afterwards. He was in real pain if it was 35+ minutes walking.

Do what you have to do to ensure your pup has a good life......... They can be OK for a while (with limited physical activity) for a while but eventually the pup will suffer. I was told that it was OK to go up to about a year or so without surgery, but after that, it becomes more serious permanent joint damage.

I can't speak for your area.... but you are doing the right thing looking for recommendations. There are vets out there that pretty much just do orthopedics. ACL is a very common injury in active dogs..... good luck and take care of your buddy.

We had a 2 year old female chocolate lab that tore her ACL around 20 years ago. Dang, can't believe it was that long ago! Surgery was $2500 then and she really never got any range of motion back after it. Had a limp for the rest of her life but still kept up with her younger black lab playmate for another 10 years.

Not sure if the NCSU Veterinary Hospital would be less expensive.
The Orthopedic service is a referral-only service. Once the primary veterinarian calls and sets up the referral, the owner may call and arrange an appointment. New patient non-emergency appointments are scheduled on Monday & Wednesday mornings.

We live in NC, but take the dog to a SC vet. It's cheaper.
VCA Animal Clinic in Fort Mill.
803-547-7000

For reference, they did a lump removal on our dog for $800. Next lowest quote we got was over $1600.

We did our 1st GSD to Huntersville at the vets below for her cancer. She had chemo (wisconsin regimen) and we got 1 more year out of her. She was already eat up at the first visit but it was worth every penny. An ACL, should not be as expensive as cancer treatment.
