Dove Opener

He has been known to steal other people's birds.

haha this afternoon a guy came and sat down a bit down from me on a hedge row with a Boykin. I was helping him try to find a downed bird in the sunflowers and I asked him how it was going. He said "I have 11 and 3 aren't even mine." The dog (Addie) found a couple birds in the briars from other folks. The pup came and sat next my chair one time after the owner missed a bird. She sat there calmly waiting for the next bird. No nervous shake or gitters you see with some dogs, just looking and taking it all in. Her owner took the next bird, she marked and off she went. It was really cool.

Myself and my sons ended up with 39 today, two young man limits and a half blind old lazy man brought in 9 more. No alcohol was involved until we were back at the house and cleaning them. It was a great day, beautiful weather!

I do believe I had the best retriever on my dove hunt. First time dove hunt and she absolutely loved it (except for the dove the started fluttering when she picked it up haha). I’ve been dove hunting ever since I was 4 (34 now) and this is by far the best one I’ve ever been on, being able to take my daughter with me😊! We were cleaning the doves and I was pointing out the organs and such and I showed her the heart and she said “Can we take it back to show mommy!” Haha Only a nurse’s daughter 😆

A dove hunt and meal with friends makes for good memories. Long ago I would go to Statesville to a large farm where about 50 of us would keep the birds moving. After was cold beer, bbq chicken, and bbq. I’d love to go back their and start up again.

Been a long time since I’ve been in the field. Haven’t known any good places to go in years. Good memories!

I hunted this morning but things were a bit slow. But I got to thinking and I realized that I have never missed opening day of dove season since I was 12 year's old. I'm 64 now. That's 52 seasons. I've hunted in thunderstorms, blinding heat and sun, howling wind and rain, tornado warnings, even a hurricane or two but I've always gone, even if was only for an hour or two.

I'm hunting with my 4th retriever now and sadly it may be my last.
