I am not an anglophile and really not into a lot of British TV, but I really liked the TV series. We binged it (as far as we could at the time) a few years ago when I was laid up recuping from shoulder surgery, then stayed current with it.

Friday night we went to the new DA movie, picks up right where the last movie left off. Very enjoyable, no real surprises. Good acting and the characters were exactly as they have been.

My wife watches it often, when visiting the Biltmore estate, the tour shows where the servants worked and lived in the basement.

We saw it last night. O didn't think it was a good as the last movie. It did leave me with questions like are we sure Granny was telling the truth? Is this a setup for a next generation show coming?

It did kinda feel like there was some closure to the series, but it felt more like the closing of a chapter than an end.

I agree, my wife and I had the same questions, especially about the possibility of a new movie or a new series with other actors representing a newer generation.

I also think I liked the last movie better as well, but this was enjoyable.

Yeah I like it, people still knew their places (just kidding, my wife keeps calling me "Baron Von Schtoopid". I liked the loaders walking behind their lords with shotguns. I want a few footmen to schlepp all my kit to the car!

It wasn't as good as the last movie or the series. Its wasn't bad. But felt rushed and some obvious fan service. The scene at the end was just anticlimactic for me....wanted to cry but it just wasn't done well. I don't know if they'll make another one...but they better hurry up or jump time cuz the actors are aging past the point of pulling off their parts.

This is a common discussion point between me and the wife in that we can't understand how "servants" are honored to be servants. I can understand the mentality of being associated with the power brokers in the Empire, but I can't see how being treated as a second class person is an honor. I personally think its the greatest con game thats ever been. The Royals have convinced these people that being a servant is the greatest honor a peasant can attain and the peasants strive to please the Royalty.

I guess that is my American privilege showing. As an American, I just can't wrap my head around this concept.

In truth it was more like "glory by association". Among the lower classes that were generally poor a Lord's servant would be looked up to since he was well mannered, well dressed and in all fairness well fed and generally well taken care of. Lifetime employment and free food and housing also isn't something to be sneezed at in those days.

I have been heavy into genealogy for a couple years. We have some lord this and lady that, and still some relation to a few with "peerage." Many, many more who are mere commoners. It does offend my American sensibilities, the whole sense of peerage, because it's determined by blood and family and not by merit.

My wife has a friend, an American, related to the Queen, and is basically forced to go over for every wedding and funeral, she has told us all about the royal protocols. I do find that all a bit amazing (I enjoy The Crown and all), but waaaaaaay over the top.
