I got an e-mail from Cabela's showing a price of $399.99 for a new DPMS Oricle after the manufacturer's rebate. Now I'm a blued steel and walnut guy...haven't got the black rifle bug so far. But with a price like that, I'm sorely tempted.
Question for y'all: is the DPMS a decent AR, or would I be better off biting the bullet and buy a Smith, or a Ruger, or something else?

T'anx!

Thanks, GoWolfPack. That's kind of what I was thinking. I don't plan on going to war this month, so it'll probably be fine for me. If I fall in love with the AR, I'll start saving my pennies for an upgrade to a Colt, or an Armalite, or a Mattel.

In war there are rifles laying around. Guess what? they are free.

I almost bought that very rifle for 427 at Gander Mountain but in the end went with the Ruger AR556 at Sportsmanguide for 475. For me that was a better fit since it comes with iron sights.

Five years ago, a buddy asked me to buy his Oracle because he couldn't make the house payment, so I did. $700 and it was a heck of a deal. I added a sling, BAD switch, and a cheap scope. Now it's on Craigslist for $600 and I get no interest at that price. I don't need the money so I'll just hang onto it until the next scare.

I'd buy one of the S&W for $450ish or spend a bit more at Brownells for the stripped Aero. It was on sale for $499 and with coupon codes was around $480. That plus some decent furniture (in any color you like) plus keep an eye out for a used Aimpoint PRO, and you will have a rifle that'll last through your children's lifetime for less than $1,000.

Edit: here's the rifle. http://www.brownells.com/firearms/rifles/semi-auto/oem-mid-length-16-rifle-prod81838.aspx

I'd add the Magpul SL stock which I think is $40 at Primary Arms right now and either a Seekins rail, BCM KMR, or even a clearance Aero rail.

A dpms was the second ar I ever bought, I'm up to ten now, I own some expensive ones, and the dpms functions and fires with the hi dollar ones, if you're on a budget it will serve you well.

I have 7 AR's and I consider the DPMS the bottom end of the collection. It works but its a lower end AR IMO.

Four of mine are the windham I have a fondness for this brand, extremely accurate right out of the box, I also have one of the original Bushmaster, made before Remington ruined the brand ,imo, but as stated the dpms is dependable, accurate, and a little less than half price of the Windham, I'd recommend them to any one on a budget, may be gonna pick up a couple more of the Windhams while market prices are down ,used prices are in the 600ish range which is a bargain imo

I put off buying an AR because I was a blued steel and walnut type of guy, too. Everybody had ARs, and I just did not see the appeal of them. But I figured that it would be good to get one so I would know how to use them and learn how they work. I finally broke down and bought a complete upper and built a stripped lower myself, since I had several recommendations to go that route.

Now I have 6.

Six, you say? S4F has ten. Cocked & Locked has two. Now THAT'S kind of scary. I've got enough addictions to last the rest of my life and not enough free time (or money) to enjoy ANY of them to their fullest. It sounds like black rifles are another contagion that will infect me and, Lord knows, I don't need more addictions or obsessions.
:)

I think that I've decided to forego the DMPS deal and upgrade a little. I've got more than a couple of safe queens that need to be peddled...maybe one or two of them will fund the purchase of something better.

Check that PwS modern musket deal I posted. If you want to spend more than that, BCMs RECCE rifle is about $1,300 and there is not a part on it I'd upgrade unless it was maybe the trigger.
