Ear protection,, what's up??

Yup, and a bullet can lodge in the barrel because it hasn't been pushed all the way through. You don't want to pull the trigger again.
As in, my gun will blow apart???
How often do squibs happen?

Very likely if you pull that trigger again. Only time I have had issues with squibs is when I bought reloads though it can happen at anytime. If you hear a soft bang when you pull the trigger it's better to clear of live ammo and check to make sure barrel has no obstructions.

maybe

Statistically long odds, but yes. It's good to listen to what your gun and ammo are doing when shooting.
Well, I've gotten to kind of like the sound of shooting now, at least it doesn't make me jump like it used to!! But now I have to add listening to the gun/ammo to the looong list of things I'm trying to do all at the same time....ok, I'll try! Lol.

i always use plugs with ear muffs. I thinking about some of those electronic noise canceling kind. What's yalls thoughts and what do you use?

I don't have time to read all three pages of threads. But there are two different kinds of electronic protection. Compression and clipping. The cheap ones do clipping and the expensive ones to compression. The biggest difference is you can hear people talking during gunfire with compression but not with clipping. Clipping cutes off the electronic hearing when there is a loud noise. Compression works on the loud noise only. Two guys with compression ear pro can carry on a conversation while people are shooting nearby. You cannot do that with clipping.

I use the MSA Sordin supremes. One thing i notice on the range. I often have them on for hours at a time. I see everyone always take theirs off when we have a break but the Sordins are so comfortable i forget i have them on. You want gel ear pads. the two top of the line units are higher end Peltors and the Sordins. Both are very good. If other units are doing compression now i am not aware of them. Spend the money on your ears.

Now indoors with Sordins i will still put in foamies. even when i had the cheaper Howard Leights i used foam ear inserts as well. It just so damn loud its distracting. HL's are great if you cannot afford better. I would either have HL's or make the jump to compression.

Since the vast majority of my shooting is outdoors and I find that my sunglasses create a gap while wearing my HL’s, I’ve been using Surefire EP4’s and really like them! They’re super comfortable, moreso than either my Peltor 5S or HL’s.

The only drawback on the EP4’s is that i still need muffs if near loud brakes. But for my own shooting of any type they’re great.

I must be the only person on the planet who doesn't have music on their phone! All I have is an mp3 player. But my tablet has lots of music on it and with a Bluetooth earmuff I assume I could listen from the tablet? (I'm not tech-y, so I have no idea if this is workable.)
The HL muffs he mentioned have a 3.5mm jack on them (your standard aux cord), so you could stick the MP3 player in a pocket or armband and use these while doing yard work.

Ok, after lots of reading here and a few range trips with them, I think the Howard Leight Impact Pro are the ones. I can turn up the sound when the trainer is talking, then dial it off when I'm ready to shoot. My original ones just muffle everything, and if you move them off your ear even slightly to hear what your coach is saying, of course someone is going to choose that exact instant so shoot his rifle! And they do have the jack so I can use my mp3 player when using the weed whacker in the yard, so I'm happy, though they are pricey!

I'll post this here since I purchased a set of Howard Leight Impact Pro muffs. Followed the link and got same day delivery eligible and they just arrived.

I read the posts and decided it was time to upgrade from the basic Wally muffs and those peltor plugs. I've been back burnering the upgrade for a while.

I just need to know a few things.

If you have bluetooth or MP3 capability, do you listen to music and if so what sort of tunes do you listen to?

Is it a distraction? Safety first!

Does the gun your shooting determine the genre? Like if I was shooting a Walther PPK, I'm thinking soundtracks to the older Bond movies would set the mood.

You need to be able to hear that rare squib wherever you are shooting.
And at matches or at an organized range you need to be able to hear range commands, so playing music would be no bueno for me.

It's funny you should ask that, as I was all excited at the thought of listening to music during my solo range trips, but I was told about squibs and the importance of not being distracted while shooting....so I gave up that idea, thought it's still attractive.
As to what music to listen to, I was planning on Metallica to start! That would have been fantastic!
But I think I'll save it for weed whacking/chain sawing days in the earmuffs....

I personally don't really like the idea either. Maybe if I had my personal dream range where I am the only one around most of the time!

I thought it might be an interesting topic as far as the songs and the gun association. Just funnin on the weekend, although I'm guessing some folks do have something piped in while they shoot.

Metallica is a good choice!

Noisefighters gel pads HL-100 to replace the set on my HL Impact Sport earmuffs.
These are silicone gel filled, about 50% thicker and have recess for your safety glasses to fit so you don't get a poor seal or headaches.
They snap right in like original.

Update: Super comfortable, blocking out more noise (I also use 3M foam plugs).

It can be a distraction..........if you are in a big group or shooting around people you dont know. If im at the range and I have a bay to myself, its cool. I will if im in a small group too, if we know each other.

I am about half deaf anyway from my Military Assignment to Tanks in the Army and many years of hunting and shooting with no hearing protection so my Howard Leight Sports work great... My son and grandson wear the Walkers....

I only use some foam plugs, the type that compress in the fingers then expand in the canal. I think they're 33NRR, typical stuff.

I've had good luck with my Pro Ears Gold. I dropped them in a creek once and after poking around with a stick I finally was able to retrieve them. I figured they were ruined but after pulling out the batteries and drying them as best as I could I hung them up for a few weeks. Well surprise, surprise, surprise if they didn't start working again. :)

FYI, my Walmart had the Surefire EP3 so I bought a set yesterday. Damn they are comfortable and easily work under my HL Impact Sport muffs. Like $15 with tax too!

I have Peltor Tactical Sport and a couple different Howard Leight models. They each have their pros and cons. The best ones that I ever had was a Peltor model sold by Dillon back in the mid 90s. These were stolen from me along with my Nikon binoculars and some other gear by a POS Charlotte-Mecklenburg cop that works out of the North Division where they all cover and lie for each other and represent the worst criminal gang in that area. But I digress. If you have a chance to try different models, I’d recommend that. Anybody that is close is welcome to try mine before buying.

Wowsers! Don't sugar coat it!
