Recently, my son got me interested in Dark Souls 3 (him knowing that I'm a long-time table-top D&D or Pathfinder geek). I have never owned a console and still use, minimally, a flip phone; I'm desperately holding on to Windows 7. Call me Ishmael Professor Ludd.

So ...

Assuming that I'm not really a "gamer" but would like to try out Souls games: and, that we occasionally watch DVD's and stream movies via Netflix: but, otherwise are pretty much low-use on the electronic entertainment scale: what does one recommend?

XBox One S say or PS 4? ::shrug:: Or, maybe, a lever gun? :)

XB1 is more than a game console to us. It allows us to have no digital cable subscriber box and access a channel guide right from the OneGuide, also interfaces with our Windows 10 machines flawlessly to play music, movies, etc. Does Netflix/Youtube/Blueray flawlessly. Bing search if you want to use a browser on the TV (works with other streaming video sites that don't have a Windows App) to access CFF :D

Does a million other things besides games, which Xbox Live Game Sub will let you try out a ton of games for $9.99 a month (basically a netflix for games) and never have to step foot in a gamestop store.

I’ve been playing on consoles since the original Xbox and prefer the Xbox exclusives to the PS exclusives so I’ve stuck w Xbox.

I did get a PS3 once but ended up just using it as a BR player because I didn’t care for any of the PS exclusives.

If anyone on XBL wants to add:

Skip the silly games and go lever gun. Your son may need it someday. It would be good for him to practice now. :p

Well, he qualified "Expert" on the M4 carbine, so he's fairly good-to-go (I wish he'd get interested in precision long-range shooting, though, as I think he'd be good at it). As for the lever gun, my wife still creases her forehead and squints her eyes after last year's JRA M14 purchase, so I need to tread carefully!

Grew up on PS and made the switch to Xbox in 2008 and never looked back. All my friends are on Xbox and the controller is way more ergonomic and natural feeling imo. I would like to play some PS exclusives like The last of us and god of war though..

You will eat up the 500gb quickly. I have a 2 TB external hard drive connected to mine.

I’m partial to Sony and the PS4, but my PS4 hasn’t been booted up in a long while. I had 3 or 4 Xbox 360s go out on me, so that soured me on Microsoft. I still have a 10yr old PS3 going strong, for Netflix at least, in my bedroom. I’m sure the newer Xbox machines are up to the task, but I’m a Sony guy from here on out...

I've been on Xbox since 2004. I've always preferred their exclusive game content (Halo, Gears of War) over Sony's (Uncharted, God of War).

I just use it for gaming these days (Battlefield 1) but you can use it as a very nice media center with all the apps you can load and it does have a built in Blu Ray player.

I got an external and haven’t looked back since.

All you console pheasants........ You can get you a cheap or an expensive PC and you'll never look back.

But I guess if I had to choose a console get a Xbox. Never liked the PS controller.

No matter what you go with you'll be able to do Hulu, Sling, etc

BTW does anyone here play EVE online?

You must be one of those #pcmasterrace people...

Another really cool thing about Xbox that a lot of people don't know about is you can game share with up to 5 people a year. My cousin is a gamer nerd and we set him up to gameshare with me and I can download and play any games he owns.... fo free

Always been a PS fan. Never cared for the controller of the Xbox.

Wasnt it XBOX that had the camera that had to stay on or something, it watched you.
Or am I way off off on that?

I made the switch 2 1/2 years ago and never looked back. Some many more games to plays. Can't play ARMA on console. Can't play EVE online on console. PUBG started as a ARMA III mod and only did it release on console cause all us PC gamers funded it lol..

But I played consoles up untill that point. Aint nothing wrong with consoles until you want to be a big boy or girl and get in to real gaming lol

Pubg is definitely a pc game. I tried it on console but since it was designed for PC the controls we're clunky and not intuitive at all. I don't wanna dedicated a whole desk setup for a PC though. I like relaxing when I game which means my butt is on the couch haha.

My first PC "desk" was a coffee table and a recliner lol

I don’t think you really go wrong with either one. As other people are pointed out look and see if you care about any of the exclusive games and you can make a decision on that. However, if you have or are getting a 4K television the Xbox X is better than any PS platform.

My son plays a lot of Fortnite. I’m personally going to get the Don’t Starve mega pack.

I have been wondering about this as well.

I have been on PC since '11 and still have a huge backlog of games. I am considering getting a decent gaming laptop that can play all that and use the Win10 function with XBONE. - But then again, I want to play some of the PS4 exclusives. Ugh...

On top of that, I don't have a 4k TV and don't know whether I would get the X or Pro if I get either.

I may repurpose my gaming PC that I built back in '11 as an HTPC.

Just get an X1.

Have you played much on a console? I ask because PC gamers usually hate consoles.

No, not since PS3. Sold that back in 2012. I am just tired of all the time spent trying to optimize or troubleshoot for each game. If I played exclusive MMORPG or something I can see keeping with PC, but I don't. The only time I think I'll miss it is the next Elder Scrolls.

At this point in my life, I'd just like to be able to come home, grab some whiskey and pick up a controller.

Watch the South Park video game console wars trilogy to be fully educated on the difference.

Yes, I think there was 27-28 thousand people on tonight lol
yeah, but how many were alts?! I know I always had a couple online... I mean... :D
I loved the look of the game (really wish there was a great EVE-light type game), but never had enough free time to really get involved in the corp lifestyle.

I just moved in to null sec a couple weeks ago with the Corp The Study Of Wumbology in TEST Alliance Please Ignore and loving it.

I don't do video games. I suck at them. Stems from childhood. Got punished for spending $5 at the arcade at the mall. At least I didn't get a beating for it. :D
And now I can't hold a controller for an hour without pain. So I don't even bother. My kids have PS3 and Ps4. My son recently discovered PC based games.

A wii would be worth picking up again just to play MarioKart

Welcome to the Dark Souls addiction. All 3 are incredible games. There is a 3rd option. By a decent gaming desktop and get a Steam account. All 3 are available from Steam.
Think I've got more hours on DS1 than any other game.

I'd thought of that, but I don't seem to do well with keyboard driven dynamic games (not sure what term to use). For example, I've played Battlefield 1942 on PC and just have a tough time with the manual dexterity. So I suppose I was hoping (with no basis in experiment) that I might do better at Dark Souls with a console. I have used Steam to play Hearts of Iron 4, however, and really enjoy that.

I understand that the DSI remastered release is coming up.

I have the XBOX One X (which is noticeably faster and better graphics than the regular XBOX) with a 2TB External drive. I had a PS4, but like others have mentioned, the MS Exclusives are better, and any game you get for XBOX you can play free on PC as well.

I have been binging on "Kingdom Come: Deliverance" lately, and it will be a "Far Cry 5" weekend for me this weekend.
