I have 2 mutts( a 45lb hound mix, and a 100lb German shepherd). The front yard is around 1/2 acre. I will be running 2 wires, one on top and the other about 6" off the ground to stop jumping and digging. What size charger would you recommend? I tend to go way overboard.... lol would the small 2 acre charger be enough? Or should I go bigger. Dont have much experience with small fences, most I have messed with are a few miles of wire. Thanks

I had a 5 mile charger and it worked fine. The dogs might hit it twice but I never had one go back for a third round.

The ground rod being planted deep is key. Also there are the intermittent pulse or constant on chargers. I used the intermittent. If I remember it put out 50,000 volts, about the same as a taser but just a pulse so it would let them go.

Ground rod is the uber important part.

I used a unit designed for sheep because it was cheap. No regrets 1.5 years later.
I used 1.5 8' ground rods (12' in the gound)

Do yourself a favor and find someone with a 3/4" hammer drill (or 1") and use the ground rod bit to drive it.
Sledge hammer on a ladder is very uncool.

Thanks guys. Definitely will have a good group. Will be putting the charger in my small building so it will be out of the elements.

All you need to drive the ground rod is a bucket of water.

So, I did this too- controller in the barn to keep the weather off of it.
3x 8ft ground rods, connected by copper #4 iirc.
Aluminum fence wire, 2 strands in some sections.

Good ground is the key.
Turned ours off after approximately 1 year- after they get bit a few times, they learn quickly.
6 years later, they still stay off the fence.
