I've upgraded to a newer trolling motor and the old trolling motor (minnkota 24v 80lb) has a pretty good area of rust where it rests in the cradle. Over the last 2 years I've sanded it, prepped it with rust converter and the first time used rustolium spray and it still rusted. The next time same prep, converter, degrease, and used car "epoxy" one part paint in a spray can, but the rust came back. Now that I'm about to sell it I took it to the authorized shop in Newbern to give it a once through to make sure it is good to go when I sell it. I'm not one to advertise beyond what it is. He sanded, used converter, and he said in his 15 years of doing it that Rustoium high heat works best. We'll 2 days later the rust bled through.

So now I'm thinking of some type of 2 part epoxy based paint. I can remember there used to be cans that you "popped" the two components together, shook like crazy, and then sprayed. Does anyone know where I might find this or have any other ideas?

Eastwood might have what you're looking for
While I haven’t used it, I’ve heard great things about Eastwood. Higher % solids is what you want.

For small things around the garage I use Rustoleum Krylon professional enamel paint and it’s worked very well for me especially for $8/tall can. Not sure how that will fare in a marine environment though.

Thanks all. I've used the rustolium rust converter and the VHT (which is actually Sherwin Williams) rust converter after sanding, wire brushing and degreasing with acetone in the past two repaints and it still came back. I've heard people mention por15, I may need to give that a shot.

It sounds like you’re not getting the rust completely removed and it just starts growing again under the paint. Any chance you could have it media blasted?

Rust converter is absolute garbage, I wouldn’t use it on a wagon.

Eastwood makes a chassis paint that is very durable but it takes a long time to dry. They offer a primer as well. If you use both, it will take you as least 2 days finish it.

Yea Think I will try media blasting. I think harborfreight has a small hand held gun and some abrasive. In the past it has been wire wheel on a grinder, sand with oscillating sander, then polish with dremmel wire wheel, then rust converter, etching primer (one time), and paint.

I went to HF this morning and got a small blasting gun and I had some coke media from a neighbor. It took a bit as my compressor did not have a high enough volume but I was able to get it cleaned. Coated it in rust converter just incase it didn't get down in and will then blast that back off and clean/prep for paint.

yes I agree normally. When I put in on in the past it would turn dark nearly black when oxide was present. I used it today as a developer to see if I blasted it all out of the little holes. When I applied it there was no color change thus no rust left. I ended up using the Rustolium high heat paint and it said to put on bare metal and no primer so off the converter came. I neglected that info. Now 2 days to cure out before sanding and recoating.

I checked out eastwood but all the epoxy cans the other day were out. I guess a lot of people are working on projects right now.

Media blast
Rust converter
POR15
Light sanding for “bite”
Body putty for smooth finish
PPG primer premixed in a spray can
PPG single stage premixed in a spray can

Go slow and wear a good respirator while spraying all of those chemicals!

Thanks all. I applied the 4th coat yesterday. It has a 48 dry before recoat dwell time. I want to make sure this issue is resolved before selling it. I can't stand people who spraypaint a turd and sell it as a gem.
