With it being County Fair time, it's time to think Fair food.
What's your favorite?
Turkey leg, candy apple, elephant ear, corn dog, cotton candy...
Although of not much 'substance', a hot pretzel and mustard is a gift from the Gods.

I always liked the corn dogs (which have a unique flavor) or the greasy thick cut French fries.

Edit to add the wife and I are now arguing about the fries. She says they weren't thick, but remembers them being served in a paper cone and putting vinegar and salt on them.

Italian sausage w/peppers and onions on a hoagie roll.

Edit: my problem now is that all the fair food that I used to enjoy will spike my blood sugar...

Just the smell of the peppers and onions cooking will make me hungry.

Anytime I'm at a fair ANY food is fair game... Corndogs first to hold me over until I decide what's next.
I have it on good authority that they actually have rides there also but I've never noticed any....

Great topic. My wife wanted to go to the fair today but it is the opening Sunday of the NFL season so I made a compromise. I would make her some fair food to hold her over until next weekend.

I got corn dogs, making carmel apples & smoked turkey legs.

I always think the sausage and peppers smell better cooking then they taste but I get one anyway. When we lived in VA I would always go to the State Fair in Richmond and go to the Brunswick Stew contest. Excellent samples of various stews.

We also can never leave the fair with out getting a funnel cake.

Speaking of the fair, the NC State Fair is running some great specials this year to celebrate 150 years. If you buy your tickets in advance, you can get in on the first day for $1.50.

At the NCState fair last year I had the pimento-cheese-jalapeno-hushpuppies. Amazing. I will be getting it again this year.

Corn and lemonade can't go wrong there

Best onion rings were over by the awning between the two buildings the gun shows are held in.

I try to buy only from the local groups as much as possible.

Nothing smells worse than the State Fair. A stout combination of body odor, grease and cow manure. I worked the place for many years and never could get over the stench. No matter what I tried to eat that background odor permeated everything. When I got home the first thing I did was throw my clothes in the washer with a double dose of detergent. I always wondered if those 3rd world open air markets you see on TV smelled something like our Fair?
