We've talked about M1A's...how about FALs, the contemporary of the M14?

I've owned three: A Springfield Armory Inc SAR-48, an Entreprise FAL, and currently have a DSA-58. The DSA started as a 16" tactical carbine built on an LMT forged receiver but next to a Remington 81 in .300 savage, the tactical carbine was the most unpleasant center fire rifle I've shot. I eventually took it to Entreprise Arms (just before DOJ/ATF shut them down) and got a surplus Imbel barrel and gas system installed. It is a much nicer rifle to shoot now.

My M1As have all been more accurate than the FALs but the FAL is certainly sexier!

Great looking stick. I’ll have to dig one out for a photo shoot.

I've owned a couple and liberated a few. My first was a Imbel SAR48 Bush rifle (18" para bbl/fixed stock) back late 80s. I mounted a ARMS upper receiver cover with a Weaver base. Mounted a Simmions 2.5x scope and took my furtherest shot on a whitetail deer at 300m, DRT. Second picked up a Belgium FAL standard model that was rebarreled with a Douglas Premium Match barrel in Germany. Friend was getting court martialed and sold it to me for $1. Sold it back to him later for same after he beat the charges and cleared. These two were semi auto only. Also in the company arms room in Bad Tolz (1/10th SFGA) was a H&R T48 test rifle. Only played with it once but never shot it.

Found couple standard FALs buried in Kuwait in 94' doing demining. Cleaned them up, shot them and gave them to EOD as we rotated out. Had couple in Iraq in 05' and 08'. The one in 08' did couple tracking missions with downtown Baghdad. These were all select fire.

You sure have done some interesting work. If you are ever in western NC and thirsty, beer is on me. You drink and talk. I’ll drink and listen.

That's a what i'm talking about. I'd love to build one along these lines.
VLTOR CASV rail, DSA top cover, threaded for a Belgian muzzle brake, Rhodesian Halbeck device over the brake, DSA two piece handguard cap, Russian Zenitco grip, and an Aimpoint COMPM4. Had to mill the rail to fit on a South African L1A1 front end. All in all it's pretty great. Highly recommend doing it on a DSA FAL as to avoid having to mill the rail.

Thank you so much for the info! I’m in the process of kitting out my SCAR17, but a FAL build is on my shortlist. You’ve got me wanting to move it up the list.

Mmmm... Always liked the look of the FAL.

Sadly, I dont think they could be particularly lefty friendly. 😕

Really! Thats cool.

Any particular techniques you use to make running them easier as a lefty?

Maybe one day I will get one afterall...
Nope. It ejects at 1 to 2 o'clock so no worry of being pelted with empties. Safety on the left but easily actuated by my trigger finger. 3rd one I've owned, great rifle.

Love my Fal, this was my first one, I put the dsa railed top cover on it and It is very accurate at 100 yards with a nikon scope.
I've had a couple others through the years but this Australian L1a1 is my favorite.

I think I've owned about a half dozen over the years, only have an Entreprise full size rifle with a pinned and welded Klinton Crime Bill brake attached.
Seriously considering having Arizona Response ?Systems giving it a good going over.

Mark at ARS does top-notch work! When I was last checking on him there was a 4-6 month wait before he’d even let you send it to him. He’s a one man operation for the most part and anyone who‘s into FALs wants him to do their work.

If you can stand the lead times I’m sure you’d be extremely happy with his work. And...he’s a curmudgeon so don’t expect a warm interaction : )

I've talked to him, though that was some years ago, but as with all good quality work, more times than not it's worth the wait.

I sent my Glock 23 to A.R.S. for a grip reduction/angle change when they first came out, ~1991. I didn't come back pretty, but it was the first and only company that I heard of that did it and I truly liked it.
