Just returned from Darlington, S.C. Went to Hot Rod Magazine's Drag Week. 400 cars started in Atlanta Sunday. They raced in Atlanta on Monday. Then they got in the cars and DROVE them to Darlington. Tomorrow they will be in Charlotte. The next day in Bristol. The next day back in Atlanta. They can only take what they can carry on or in the car and whatever trailer they want to pull. NO SUPPORT vehicles. Oh, and on pump gas.
Here's the good part, they are running in the 6s. Yes in the 6s. The 6s. Way over 200 mph. Like 219 mph. I never, in my wildest dreams of Hot Rodding, thought there were cars lurking amongst us on the highway capable of this kind of performance. 5 and 6 hour drives in rain, heavy traffic, stop and go to sign in at each check point and then pull in, change tires, make adjustments and FLY.
Great day, great memories, and now to shoot!

Sounds like a good time. Wish I coulda went. Some pictures would be nice.

I drove down to Charlotte to pick up a gun today. Saw a ton of tricked-out cars on the way. Thanks for explaining what I saw. :)

Pictures of gun? Pictures of cars?

Gun pic is up...the cars were rolling too fast for this old photog. :(

That’s crazy. That’s Pro Stock speeds.
And PS cars are full race chassis with carbon fiber bodies, have $100G motors that rev over 10,500rpm, run 118 race gas, make 1500hp+, weigh less than 2500lbs, and are on huge racing slicks that have been warmed up with burnouts.

Those dudes must have VTec AND nitrous!!

I bet they aren’t much fun as daily drivers!

Most were at the side of the highway, in groups. The one I actually passed (sure he loved having a stock Mini Cooper blow by him) was towing some slicks, and had a blower so tall I wondered how he could see to drive.

I went with Battery Oaks Billy, had a great time. its amazing to see what this guys had to do to ride in a 1950's Gasser from Atlanta to Darlington S.C.

I copied this photo from last year's thread. The one I passed yesterday looked something like this.

I had a conversation with 2 men driving the twin to the "Two Lane Blacktop" and "American Graffiti" car. Guys I'm not sure I could have survived that 5-6 hour ride in a 100 degree + oven. Crude is a compliment. Obviously these cars are built with intent. The point is, it takes unbelievable commitment to build and endure cars that will give this level of performance. These same cars were around in my youth but in the 50s these were 13-15 second cars and very FEW riding around on the street.
Several hundred people got a treat yesterday and I am so happy to have been able to attend with folks that appreciate the efforts these men put up.

The unlimited class is pretty much a Outlaw 10.5, or Pro Modified type stuff. Crazy horsepower to go 6's in the quarter at over 210 mph. Got a buddy in Alabama with a Outlaw 10.5 Mustang with a 598 cu.in. all aluminum Ford motor, with twin 98's on alcohol, that would propel that car at 3040 pounds on a 31x10.5 inch slick to 4 teens at almost 200 in the EIGHTH mile, lol. That takes 3000 horsepower or so, and the car was docile for the most part, lol. I took pics years ago of Rod Saboury's 63 Twin Turbo Vette at the PRI show, that he was telling me he was gonna run in the Hot Rod Drag Week back I think around 06-08. He invited me to meet up with him in Atlanta, but I was at another race in Mississippi I believe at the time. Fun times back then.
