Favorite Antacid?

Try buying and using papaya extract. You just eat three of them after every meal. After a week my brother was able to stop taking prescription antacids.

Since I use papaya it is rare for me to have a need anymore. But when I do Zantac 150 is where it was at.

I thought papaya extract was a "meat tenderizer"? That should do wonders for your guts. :D

Having none of these problems I opened this thread only for amusement...I am disappointed.

Take a teaspoon of baking soda. Chase with a swig of water. Worked for my dad, works for me... that and generic tums.

Fight fire with fire:

I was going to say bourbon and Diet Pepsi.

I had my gallbladder taken out a 8 days ago. I am having more trouble now than before my surgery. I am chewing tums like they going to quit making them. I am calling my Dr. first thing in the morning.
I was lucky enough (not) to have the old-style open cholecystectomy because of some complications. A 17" scar and more than a year later, the GERD has subsided and I can eat mostly regular again. The only thing I can't tolerate is raw onions and milk. I drank a small amount of Bragg's Apple Cider Vinegar daily, was a big help.

Eat low carb and never worry about heart burn
This.

With wheat products being the worst acid producers for me, like @rantingredneck mentioned above. Heartburn and bloat within an hour, that lasts at least 3-4 hours.

When I absolutely have to take something, Pepcid Complete works best.

For prevention, if I'm not being a low-carb good boy, Bragg's Apple Cider Vinegar in water in the morning, and a small glass of dry red wine about an hour before bed. Sounds backwards, because they are both acidic; but they have pretty complex chemistries that act as a buffer, so they tie up some stomach acid without raising pH enough to prompt your stomach to produce more. Antacids are alkaline, and neutralize stomach acid; so your stomach produces more acid to drop the pH back down, and you have to take more antacid to counteract it. The drug companies sell a lot of antacids this way.

It's funny that both heartburn and sinus issues are coming up here. Both for me were resolved through diet changes. I was taking a ton of meds for both heartburn GERD and sinus issues. I'd already had two upper endoscopies.

When I went strictly Paleo in 2012 I cut out all the inflammatory food groups. I was pretty strictly low carb Paleo for about a year. I added some things back in gradually like rice, dairy, and potatos/nightshades and none bothered me. I still stay moderate to low carb and still maintain a gluten/wheat free diet, because the consequences of not really suck.

Now, unless I get accidently glutened or I overdo it on non wheat sweets, I have no issues with heartburn at all.

The holiday season makes it tough. I tend to eat what is put in front of me. If I have to go seeking food for myself, I make better choices.

My wife has now gone gluten free too so that makes it easier. She's about 10 months in. Oddly enough I can tolerate a minimal amount of something like regular soy sauce (which contains wheat) without having a bad reaction. Maybe mild heartburn. She is another story. Any amount of wheat and she has major stomach upset and migraines.

You should change the personal message under your username to " ....gluten for punishment....".

Eat dill pickles or kosher dill pickles or take a swig of pickle juice. Knocks the heartburn down in minutes. Makes some great burps.

Zantac or Nexium. Be sure to take zantac about an hour before eating.

You know how I know I’m surrounded by old dudes?

This thread got serious responses and not the haughty sarcasm I expected!

(+1 Equate....)
HA HA HA HA HA HA!
And Omeprizole was what I used as needed when I had trouble.
Oddly enough, I RARELY have any issue since I started using a C-PAP.
(Another old man issue...)

Wait a minute...

I thought pickle juice and apple cider vinegar were for cramping....
