Favorite Scotch or other brown whiskey

Now that Midliferally has shown up we should have a good scotch thread in short order.

For me the latest was The Glenlivit 12 year old that Studentofthegun was so gracious enough to bring over, and I was smart enough to subsequently hide from thrillhill
Drinking Scotch tonight surprisingly enough.

I'm an Irish whiskey drinker to the bone, but The Glenlivet is one smooth, tasty dram.

I'm more of a rum guy, myself.

But, we just cracked the seal on a bottle of 18 year Jameson Irish Whiskey I got for my oldest brother's birthday a few days ago. That's some goooooood stuff!

I've got some Woodford Reserve around here, somewhere, that's pretty good, too.
I've had a few different bottlings of 18y/o Jameson & all of them were incredible. Super smooth, just the right sweetness & that wonderful hint of caramel-apple.

Woodford reserve. I've been meaning to try the double oaked. Old no.7 if I'm mixing with coca-cola.

My selection was a best guess. Glad it was decent. Bourbon I know. Scotch is foreign to me.

I've drank Jack Daniels for as long as I've been drinking. Old Number 7 with some Gentlemen Jack thrown in for good measure. I really like the JC Single Barrel Select, but at @ $65-70 a fifth it's a little bit pricey! I've lately found some JD Old Number 2 and 3. They are remaking all the old Master Distillers recipes. You can taste a difference.

Try a little George Dickel 12, think you will like it. It's my go to if I can't fnd Blanton.

Well I know I am an unwashed heathen, Drinking a little Kracken and apple juice. The Green Heron

And watching First Blood. Gonna be one of those nights.

never could acquire the taste for Scotch, but almost anything from Copper Barrel in Wilkes County is pretty dang good

The wife got me a new coffee maker for Christmas, one of those fancy one cup deals. I'm trying a strong coffee with a good shot of Bailey's for good measure! Pretty good on a cool night , with a fire and a good book!

I use to be a Jack Daniels drinker in my younger years then switched to Dickel . Never been a heavy drinker ,never developed taste for scotch . But lately I have taken a shot or two in my old age, helps me sleep better ;). Bulliet Bourbon and Rebel Yell have been my go to bourbons . Both are smooth and go down easy .Also Crown apple over ice is a good sippin drink

Pretty sure if I had to pick only one Whisky to drink for the rest of my days it would be Highland Park 18. If you haven't tried it, do yourself a favor! The depth of flavors is amazing. Try it, you'll like it. My $.02

Since I'm a family man now I don't drink as much and I don't spend as much. Evan Williams for me the 12 year old stuff. As far as blended scotch goes I use to love chives regal 18 year old suits my taste. Single barrel scotch I like McCallen and Glenlivet the 12 year old glenlivet is the most I would spend. Those days are gone for now, I'm happy with the even williams.

edit to add: a nice irish wiskey is always a good choice. I like Michael collins irish wiskey and JJ.

Maker's Mark and Blanton's are what I prefer. I do like Jack Daniels and Wild Turkey as well. As far as Scotch, Glenlivet 16 Nadurra, Macallan, Glenfiddich... most any decent single malt. Looking at my list, I'm beginning to think I must really like whiskey.

Would still rather spin the top off a mason jar, tho. Love me some high-test corn liquor.

This is my go to commercial white liquor:

Studentofthegun Then you and I need to get together something and have a tasting.

I picked up a bottle of this on spec. the last trip out to Colorado. This is some seriously smooth whiskey!

I discovered that it is actually possible to drink so much scotch that one finally gets sick of it. Because I did it.
I still have a fifth of my favorite 12 year old single malt that I bought before Thanksgiving that just won't get empty.

Oh, I know that one very well. Always a special treat. Huge Laphroaig fan, as well & have 2 bottles of their Triple Wood in the cabinet.

I enjoy all spirits, but prefer Irish whiskey over any other.
So what are you recommendations for single malt Irish?

Red Breast is always good. Tyrconnel is more than decent & Teeling is excellent. Bushmill's 16 is superb & the 21 is sublime. I've got a bottle of their 1608 400th Anniversary bottling put back & is one of the best whiskeys I've ever tasted. Midleton Very Rare is killer, but spendy.

Jameson Gold Reserve is my favorite, by far, but hard to find in NC.

Irish whiskey, IME, tends to be uniformly pretty damned good, across the price spectrum. Kilbeggan, Power's & Feckin are all great whiskeys for pretty short money.

Laphroaig used to be my go to single malt, but when I can find it in the US it's above my pay grade.

I've a fondness for Jack and Jim, Larceny isn't bad and I like a little Crown before bed, it settles the stomach.

Yes. I see much more of this kind of whiskey in the free enterprise liquor stores in CO than I do in NC, although there are a couple of stores in High Point which seem to carry more of the high end stuff. The one off of 68 close to I-40 has a pretty good selection. And the store on Skeet Club in the Harris Teeter shopping center isn't bad either.

My go to's are Bulleit and Buffalo Trace, but if I'm speedy a little more to get something nice then it's Woodford Double Oaked or Jefferson Ocean.

My favorite, hands down, is Glen Livet 15 year old French Oak Reserve. A close second is (or rather was) Johnie Walker Green Label. The stuff they replaced it with is horrible.

After those 2 I would say Glen Livet Nadura. Johnnie Walker Blue and then Glen Livet 18 year old.

I think I've tried just about everything out there over the years and those are the ones that tickle my pallet the best. Luckily my top three favorites are all around $50 a bottle. While I like the Blue its just too damn expensive to really enjoy.

I got a small collection of bourbon here at the house, so yeah we can get together someday. It's not super duper fancy but it's not bad considering we have to contend with the ABC store. Will try to pick up a couple new things when I travel to SC.

Anyone tried Yellow Spot Irish Whisky? My only foray into Irish Whisky was Jameson 18. Good reviews on Yellow and the ABC in Angier has it but I have been sidetracked with exploring scotch. What say ye??

Never had the old Green. Heard good stuff. Have you tried Platinum? I like it better than most reviewers. I bought 6 bottles of Green in Kiawah at a little liquor shop. Pretty sure they are the "New" Green. Hmmmm, wonder how I could tell? Off to google.

Went to the ABC store the other week and they were completely out of Crown, had to get a half gallon of Wild Turkey.

Unintentionally kinda gave up drinking when the kids came along. Used to enjoy all kinds of mixed drinks, but Makers Mark and a round ice cube was my sipping favorite. Probably still is.

The favorite is whatever happens to be in the glass at the time. I don't smoke so no sticks around.

As far as Bourbon if I could I would have George T. Stagg in the glass full time, but I cannot so my go to is Colonel E.H. Taylor Small Batch which I seem to have a knack for locating. Four Roses Single Barrel always seems to have a place in he house and I've always got a handle of Buffalo Trace at the ready. If you haven't tried it get some Old Grandad Bottled-In-Bond and thank me later. Best described as inexpensive and tasty.

For Scotch I would drink Macallan 18 all the time if it was affordable. Since it is not I really love Balvenie Double Wood. Kirkland (Costco) has a 12 year blended half-gallon which is darn tasty. They also have an Alexander Murray Blended which is quite good.

I like the Japanese Whiskey and in NC you can get the very light Suntory Toki for $30 while everywhere else it run $45-55. Hakushu 12 and 18 are divine as is Hibiki 12. Nikka Coffey Malt is a darn nice glass.

I'm a fan of Makers and Dickel......either chilled with a splash of water.

I do want to try Basil Hayden though.
