On 26 Feb, a group of North South Skirmish Association members held a "Recruit Skirmish" at our main range in Winchester VA. There were approximately 20 members of the public who were invited through their expressing an interest in the N-SSA. Rob Harrison organized the event and got a group of fellow N-SSA competitors to help. For those who might not know about the N-SSA, we're a competition shooting organization that centers around the arms of the American Civil War and that also includes artillery. Here's a few pictures from the event.

Rob Harrison, in sgt stripes, conducting an initial instruction prior to shooting.

Guests on the line shooting Civil War muskets with live ammunition. There are a number of N-SSA members behind the line monitoring. Many of them are also NRA Muzzleloading Instructors.

The guests shot in Positions 9, 10 & 11. Note how far the line extends, all the way to position 73.

Get them started young. Even this little fellow got some trigger time.

Annnnd BOOM! This shot sums up why I am passionate about youth instruction. Get them started early and in the right way and you'll have a positive 2A person for life.

Take a kid to the range! Teach them well. You may never know how a strong positive influence early in life can guide the course of the rest of a young person's life.

And yup, some artillery was shot live as well. This is a full size "mountain rifle", an artillery piece used by cavalry and troops in rough terrain. In our organization, they're the "sniper" artillery pieces because they're extremely accurate. I've often seen one hole groups shot from these tearing out the center of their "X" ring.

This is "Papa" Rob Harrison, the driving person organizing this event. He's a fellow NRA Muzzleloading Instructor, US veteran, fellow N-SSA member, and a true example of what makes a Southern Gentleman. Although he's on a different N-SSA team from me, we share a passion for working with others to share muzzleloading and frequently discuss muzzleloading and instruction. At a competition, when the horn sounds, I'll do my dead level best to beat him and he'll be returning the favor but at the end of the day, this is the kind of person I will always be proud to call my friend.
