FFP vs SFP

Interesting thread. Over the last few years I have purchased FFP/MIL scopes and have really enjoyed them. For shooting under 300 yards then I would recommend SFP or even a fixed power scope such as the SS series. I gave up on the MOA MIL debate a long time ago. Get what you like. Even though they have nothing to do with inches or centimeters we tend to use them as such. 1/4 inch @ 100 yards, or 1 cm @ 100 meters (rough approximations). Just don't mix them up. When it comes to reticles I really like a MIL reticle with a 1/10 mil scale somewhere in the view in a FFP scope. Say I hit to the left and up on my target at 527 yards (or meters, it doesn't matter). I put the 1/10 scale on the impact point and measure over to the bullseye and if it measures 7 on the scale I quickly dial (7 clicks) to the right or hold that distance on the reticle. Same with elevation. I'm getting quite good at that. A few seconds at the most. And with a FFP scope distance doesn't matter. What would be nice is if they took the 1/10 scale and put it in the center of the reticle. The Burris XTR II has these hash marks but on the ends of the reticle planes. I assume there are others. I just purchased a NF Benchrest with 1/8" clicks that is MOA/SFP and I'm still wondering if I made the right decision. We'll see what happens. I plan on shooting paper (tightest groups I can get) at fixed distances (300, 600, 900 and 1,000 yards) so it should be fine.

For hunting open fields I like the FFP too. Several years ago I had a deer out in a field at an unknown distance. The "depth" of an adult deer is approximately 20 inches from the back to the brisket. I had made a simple table using the distance formula based on mils out to 500 yards. in other words if the "depth" of the deer covers 1.5 mils then using my little chart it gave me an approximate distance. Knowing the approximate distance I dialed up to the max (FFP largest FOV reticle), held the reticle for that distance and killed the deer. I'm not sure but I believe the distance was 480 some odd yards. I have the messy details written down in my journal. And I want to say that I was hunting from a stand covering a large field that had a solid bench built in. I do not recommend shooting at animals at extreme distances unless you really know your firearm, have a rock steady rest, and know your OPTICS.

in my never humble opinion, that would make the center of the scope far too busy and cluttered. I like it on the edge, and I run 3 different XTR IIs.

I would like the option.
