I didn't start hunting until just a few years ago. Each year I've gotten progressively closer to killing one, including missing a spike with my bow last year and missing a buck with my muzzleloader this year. Today though, I did not miss. Doe stepped out this evening at 75 yards and I popped her. DRT. As I started toward her, a fawn stepped jumped away, but I had a shot. If I had it over again, I probably wouldn't have taken the shot, but I shot the fawn too. Didn't kill it immediately, and I rushed a second shot which took the guts and moved them outside. Wasn't able to salvage much from it at all.

Still, it's an exciting day as I've now got the first venison I've ever been responsible for icing down.

Congrats on the first deer! A DRT shot on an adult doe is a good thing.

I also hope it's "lesson learned" on snap shots. A snap shot is rarely a good thing on a deer sized animal. Know your target is one of the fundamentals of shooting sports and safety.

Certainly several lessons learned.

To elaborate on the second deer killed, and to hopefully clear up any questions, let me say that if I had it to do over again I probably wouldn't have shot it.

The first shot on the animal was a good shot. It was not a snap shot. It was safe and well-placed. It would have killed the deer on its own. The poorest judgment came from my snap decision to take a second shot. That's what resulted in the gut shot, and was not a good shot.

As I said earlier, this wasn't a spotted fawn, but if I had it over again I probably wouldn't have taken the shot.

Lessons learned for the future, and meat in the freezer.

If I shoot something early I generally keep hunting. A lot of times the deer will come out about 10-15 minutes after a shot.

I hope you got to see that little twitch they give just before they die.

A single shot really does not mess much up. If they are moving, they'll keep right on moving after a few minutes.
