Firearms instructor shoots himself.

That's not exactly true. It depends on the course of fire various instructors have had approved by NC DOJ when they design courses other than the standard NC DOJ red book. I know of several that have included drawing from concealed, shooting from cover, shooting from low ready, etc. included in the live fire qualification.

I agree, when i do my CCH qual shoots i do so from low ready usually. My classes are inside, but we shoot outdoors and there is no shooting bench. So they come to the line gun down to the side or in a holster if they have them.

Of course there's a zillion people 'teaching' this stuff so who knows what some of them do.
There was a guy who used to teach a CC class, and he had the students weaving around stools set between the firing areas and the tables along the back of the room....with loaded guns! The stools were "obstacles" or "cover".....oh, my goodness!

Not to sound like a smartass, but honestly I don’t know, and I don’t care. Just because Blackhawk's lawyers are okay with it doesn’t mean you should be.

Look, my first kydex/polymer holster was a Serpa. They are widely available, so I bought one after only buying leather for carry till then.

First time I shot with it on the clock in a match seven or eight years ago I was yanking on the thing in the “stress” of the moment right after the shot clock went off. Didn’t like it. In that time I’ve been through multiple classes with recognized trainers both locally and nationally and heard the same thing regarding that holster. Won’t allow it in their classes.

Additionally, I shoot defensive pistol matches nearly every weekend somewhere in the state of NC with around 5-6 different match directors, some who I have gotten to know personally and they have been doing this for upwards of twenty years each. I’m also a safety officer at the largest of those matches where we run 75-100 shooters a month. None of these match directors like those holsters, and you won’t see a competitive shooter run one.

Now, lets say you are LEO, and have to go hands-on with folks from time to time. You obviously need some kind of more positive retention. As I mentioned up thread, there are superior alternatives. Safariland making two fine examples. I own neither because that’s not how I carry, nor am I LEO.

My only two cents further on the matter, if you decide to try your hand at shooting on the clock, don’t bring one of those holsters.

OK, but I think you see my point. If it was truly dangerous they would not exist.

I shoot on the timer almost every weekend at classes. I have countless draws from a Serpa and other holsters under the clock. I shoot A LOT and its all from a holster. I also shoot different guns with different holsters. Retention holster is going to add time to the draw.. I am surprised the gamers use a retention holster at all. All I do is training classes. I see lots of students with all manner of gear. I see them jerking on holsters that have no retention, but somehow manage to fumble it. The worst is nylon crap. Far better to have a Serpa than that nylon crap. Sig sells a holster that is VERY similar to the Serpa by the way, paddle type lever. I would also point out i have a Safariland retention holster right in front of me and when my trigger finger is placed on the plastic as i draw, my trigger finger goes right on the trigger. If i put pressure on my finger when i draw it will go right in the trigger guard. My point to this is, never put your finger on the trigger until you are ready to shoot. Regardless of the holster.

You don't listen very well. They are truly dangerous because people keep shooting themselves drawing from them. That's why they aren't allowed at any matches I know of. Because people shoot themselves. They are dangerous.

All the different competition leagues didn't get together and decide to randomly pick a holster to ban because they were on a power trip. They banned them because of repeated NDs and injuries that happened using those holsters in many different types of matches.

Maybe you can use one and have no problem (at least not yet). Great. There are lots of yahoos out there that can't. It's a risk that can be avoided. It is smart to avoid risk when the penalty is shooting yourself in the foot or leg. It is (not smart) to ignore that risk.
