I am a major fan of the show, loved it. Still watch them every now and then and watch Serenity at least once a year. I would love to see it come back, but they killed off some of my favorite characters in Serenity. So bringing it back as a "20 years later" style show, it would be missing Wash and Books. If they did it before Serenity, then the actors are too old. And if they try to reboot it with different actors it will be darn hard to match the chemistry and the comedic timing the original crew had. Lets face it, the show was pretty simple at its core in premise. It was the relationship >those< crew members had with each other that made the world so believable and enjoyable.

Loved the show still watch it all the time in the movie. As much as I would love to see the series come back. Nathan Fillion has his own cop show now. Is he going to walk away from the rookie to play Mal?

I definitely would be up for it if JW came back to write and direct and the original cast!

I am a leaf on the wind!

Well here ya go, if they remake this they will fk it up as per usual by re-inventing it to RESONATE with today.

"The macro answer is, any time we look at one of our classic titles, if there's a way to reinvent it for today so it's as resonant now as the original was, and is, to the fans, we're wide open," Thorn told The Wrap.

What has come to bother me about the show, is that at its core it is about some freedom loving characters who are doing their best to steer clear of the government who is always trying to ruin their business, disarm them, and/or kill them. Yet, in real life Joss Whedon is a severe leftist anti-gunner who really identifies with everything the Browncoats fought against.

It reminds me of Mark Hamill, who played a character who is constantly fighting against an oppressive government that seeks to dominate the entire galaxy and only through stolen weapons do these rebels stand a chance...yet in real life Mark is also >extremely< anti-gun who also would be a true supporter of an all oppressive government that crushes any dissent against the rule of the mighty.

Whedon is very good at writing strong independent characters that are a role model for all of us. I just let that be what it do and call it good enough.

That, such as it is. And Nate, though done well, has aged. The "Star Wars" saga suffered (IMHO) by time shifting and bringin back character actors in their later years.

    Love this.
There are places it can go,
Especially if you read the comics.

as in, what happened to the “two by two hands of blue men,” the operative, etc...

maybe this time they would let JW run with it and stay out of his way...

Well, they definitely had lightening in a bottle. The tragedy of the cancellation made it even more adored imho. I don't think it ever resonated with the great unwashed ala' the Kardashians, but to those select few it was shiny.

With the myriad of channels producing content for niche markets seems very doable. Look at the Whitcher series. Netflix and now Amazon are making content like mad men. Maybe there is room for something like Firefly. The writing was great and as has been said, the characters were really good.

Nathan Fillion is probably key to it though. At least some guest spots if it was a spin off would be necessary.

The series suffered the same fate as the Browncoats. I think that was one reason it got the cult following it did. Mostly, it was JW's wit.

Larry Corria wrote about the special level of hell where they will put the network executives who cancelled Firefly.

I'd give it a chance if they brought it back, but I really doubt they can do a good job with it. What made the original so good was the interaction of the caste. Yes great writing plays a role, and so do good actors playing the parts, but you cannot recreate the chemistry of the individuals. That show had the perfect caste for the parts.

I'll give it a chance but I fully expect any Firefly re-boot to be as bad as Another Life

I liked Firefly despite the oftentimes far too cutesy dialogue, mainly because of the cast--like others have been saying. One scene with Jayne and Mal really stood out, after Jayne had betrayed the crew, and Mal was about to kill him. Jayne said something like "Mal, when I'm dead, don't tell them what I did." It was perfect. The movie, though, I kind of hated. If they reboot, I'm sure I'll try to watch it, and quickly fail.

I oddly loved the movie. I could tell they were trying to pack as much in as possible to make the fans happy while wrapping up a story line. Sucks the deaths though, Shepherd Book was one of my favorites. Always wanted to know where he learned all of his awesomeness.

The movie was great--something I could have never done. How do you take a story that has a fan-base arguably more rabid and protective than Star Wars, a story with many avenues to explore but a central one to respect, bring newcomers up to speed in the first 10-15 min, and address the possibility of the story never seeing the light of a screen ever again. Joss did all that.

That said, he is a whiny liberal that can't stand the very life he writes about. But he'll cash that royalty check before close of business, you bet yer ass!

I'm honestly floored Firefly hasn't been picked up by Amazon, Netflix, or even ScyFy. I've heard a rumor all along that Fox put the series on "hiatus" status instead of "cancelled" which has some implication on the rights of the series. And that has held it from anyone ever doing anything with it in series form (I guess movies are different since that happened--or Warner Bros paid through the nose for it).

Because of Shepherd's comments to Mal about the operative, I assumed he had been one in his past life.

Well, yeah, there were hints, but I was looking forward to it being a story line that would get developed.

Iirc there's a limited run comic about just that.

I don't see them being able to pull it off again though. It will have all the mandatory SJW/PC/LBGTQWXYZ crap shoehorned in for one thing.

I've heard buzzings and hints about a revival for years, almost since it ended. Seems to be an annual "we'll have firefly this year" thing. I'll believe it when it happens.

There was a major screw up with the game they were making years ago. It was going to be pretty cool; even had the original actors voicing characters. There were updates and regular teasers, even a “pre game” game where you could start collecting ships and crew members.

Then poof...silence. No reports, no official word, just disappeared.

This was like 4 or 5 years ago.

I’ve been filling the “small ship, small crew, decent sci-fi” jones with The Expanse. I’m in season 2 and so far it’s worth a watch.

There was a comic made on it. HE wasn't really Book. He killed Book and took his identity. He had also been a double agent who had become a high ranking officer in the alliance and was responsible for the death of MANY alliance soldiers before being discharged for his "mistake". He found God in a bowl of soup.

I @lways loved firefly and the serenity movie, could never figure why they cancelled it...the good shows die young

The fact that the government would even consider repealing the second amendment is the very reason for which it was written.

    ** Expanse spoiler alert**

Agreed, the first season for me was a hard slog. It got better. I like the hard sci fi, more realistic space show. Introduces people to real life space ship problems versus something like Star Trek or Star Wars. I like the Belter accent they developed. Now when they got to the worm hole i am thinking wow, this sets up a good premise for something like Stargate where they can explore different worlds. At least the last season didn't really pan out that way. I was a bit disappointed with the way it ended. Give the writers a full unexplored universe and we can go anywhere.

Any reboot will have a gender neutral character. Just wait. Possibly a planet where some chemical makes a genetic change.

...and the government sets up special vacation trips for people to attend and receive the genetic change free of charge...only to find out that the original Reaver planet was the original attempt but was actually sabotaged by the browncoats because they just cant even...

LOL. That would be sad. I watched some sci fi show not too long ago and they had a gender neutral doctor. Basically a dude that looked girlish and of course "he/she/it" found love in space. It's too bad we have to rely on people in Hollywood to write stories. Their world and mine are a lot different.

I liked Firefly, but I couldn't stand the girl from the freezer and her annoying brother. I think the show would have been 2X as good if they'd just booted them both out an airlock at the first opportunity.

    Ok how mean am I?

This thread made me want to watch the series again. My son started watching it with me and he really likes it, asking me to pause it when he has to go to the bathroom.

I haven't told him that it was cancelled prematurely yet.

It is mean...but this is a tough world...it will help teach the man that just because he has good taste in entertainment not everyone will share it. Just take him out for ice cream to help him with his tears.

Well if you can get a kid to ask to pause it when he leaves the room you know he likes it. I to started watching it again over the weekend.

All of you are just causal fans of the show. Until you reach my level of geekdom by having Serenity and its miniature crew on your Christmas tree too, I consider you subservient to my fandom.
