Got this email today, never heard of "NC CAMO" or any problem with the '97 Fisheries Reform Act.

Thoughts?

TAKE ACTION

Legislation has been proposed to fix significant problems with NC's 1997 Fisheries Reform Act, which has led directly to a continuing diminution of fish populations. The current law is clearly failing, as only five of 22 state-managed coastal finfish and shellfish stocks are currently considered viable.

The Coastal Fisheries Conservation and Economic Development Act (H867) has a simple premise - conserve marine fisheries stocks as necessary to sustain growing populations and harvest only the surplus that will allow growth to sustainable levels for all. This legislation will help grow the entire fishing economy, benefitting all North Carolinians.

H867 provides multiple improvements to the existing law:

* Affirms that marine fisheries are a public resource

* Requires management decisions be based on science

* Prioritizes resource growth - The proposed legislation defines "conservation" to maximize long-term benefits of our public resource.

* Streamlines regulatory process

* Strengthens management plans

Members of the North Carolina General Assembly now have an opportunity to prioritize sustainable economic growth for the ENTIRE fishing economy. The state must grow our fisheries resource and maximize its economic benefits.

Now is the time to let your House member know you support House Bill 867.

I read all I could of the law. I don't know who CAMO is either.

Best I can read it is more of the same. The only way to know for certain is to follow the money. Real change has never taken place because of the massive influence of commercial fishermen.
If you don't limit EVERYONE, then you should limit no one. As long as we let commercial fishermen kill 100lbs of fish to catch 25 all the limits in the world on hook and line fishermen are of no effect.

Show me a bill that limits commercial fishermen to the same equipment as everyone else, and I'll show you a conservation plan that will work.

No more trawlers. Period. I didn't see those words in that bill.

Hook and line for everyone. No more bycatch.
Problem solved.

Something to think about.

The species that are viable, just happen to not be historically targeted by commercial interests. That is changing as stocks diminish.

Then you have lobbyists for commercial fisheries producing 'studies' that purport to show that recreational fishermen take more fish than commercial. BS.
Recreational fishermen only take what they can eat or catch and release.

It has been legally impossible to take more than a small family can eat for a very long time. Some species it's impossible to keep enough to even have a "mess".

NC Camo Coalition are a group who watch and drum up support for/against laws concerned with game and wildlife management etc. I think I got signed up at a gun show, I just delete their stuff, it always seemed a bit hyperbole laden for my taste.
