Foothills Range, no 556 allowed?

I assume that there might be some steel targets at the range that they do not want destroyed by ammo that will damage them. Tracers can cause fires. Ask me how I know. Steel core and bimetallic bullets can also cause fires when they spark when they hit a steel target. We have similar restrictions in our private range. No problem. There are many types of 223 ammo that you can shoot that do not cause the problems they are trying to prevent.

I do not know if this plays into those rules, but they have had some issue keeping that place open. Several neighbors tried to shut it down. I can see the possibility of ammo designed for more penetration to possibly be more prone to skipping off the range instead of impacting the berm and staying in the range. I've been on a range where lead soft point subsonic skipped off the berm and certainly got off the range but probably not off the property. Having been in leadership meetings at the club poor range safety and/or rounds leaving the range are the biggest sources of concern for a club.

yeah but....XM193 is simply generic 55gr ball ammo. No steel/penetrator core at all. It's just lead with copper jacket.

People making rules but not really knowing what they are talking about. Go figure.

FWIW, hit up NCWRC about it. They are pretty good about responding and getting your questions to the right person.

Don't forget the "no concealed carry" signs posted everywhere. It's a fantastic range but it's got the Fudds bad.

Without getting into “does this make sense”, the way it was explained to me is that all 5.56 is forbidden. 223 is good to go.

ETA: they “think” 5.56 will damage their baffles.

My issue with them is something else- their closing down of this “public” range on given weekends for dedicated pistol matches. 😡😡😡 This ranges primary interest to me is their 250 range. Which gets shut down when these matches are scheduled.

Maybe this isn't the right thread for this question, but it's always baffled me that off the shelf 55gr 223 and m193 are both speced at 3200fps or thereabouts. I thought 5.56 was supposed to be hotter?

Admittedly, (x)m193 is hotter than .223, but not so much so that it should make difference on a range. It should have read m855/SS109.

True mil-spec m193 is loaded to a higher pressure spec. ( I think 5%.) over the SAAMI spec for .223. The advertised velocity may or may not be a marketing issue.
To add confusion, the term 5.56 does not necessarily refer to m193.

like XM193....
I will show my ignorance by admitting that I am not real familiar with XM193. Evidently they are not either.

I have armour piercing rounds for my M1 Garand. I have bimetallic bullets for several 30 caliber rounds and tracers for a few. They do not seem to be targeting black rifles.

So, they ban green tip ammo. Steel core ammo. Bi-metal ammo.

But then they ban "high velocity ammo like xm193."

Is it just me, or is all 556 ammo banned?
I didn't see steel jacket or bi-metal on the list of banned ammo types. XM193 is or was Federal's way of marketing contract overruns or culls from M193 production. As someone else wrote, just don't have your ammunition in brown boxes labeled XM193.

My private club requires that all visible firearms be unloaded with the magazine removed when not getting ready on the firing line. A concealed handgun is not visible and is of no concern. The concealed carry question is not addressed in our written documents but has the unofficial approval of the BOD. It has never been a problem.

  • Use High-Velocity rounds like XM193 or calibers larger than 300 Win Mag like 50 BMG or 338 Lapua
I wonder if that would mean that I could not shoot my 32/20 or 32 Special rifle? I would hate not to be able to shoot a 45/70 at a range. I feel that they did not do a real good job wording the rules or making it obvious why they have the rules.

We have some strange rules that make sense when they are explained. Full automatic weapons are restricted to certain ranges with high berms. We also require that they be shot from a minimum specified distance from the berm. This is to minimize the risk that bullets will go over the berm.

Agreed. This “public” range has been a disappointment. Im currently looking for a range better suited for 200 yd + shooting within a couple hours ride of WNC.

My 25-06 is 3200fps with some loads. 35 Whelen 200gr at just a touch over 3000fps has a whole lot more energy. Maybe they are tired of people flailing away with black semis and not hitting squat and not cleaning up their brass.
