1986 Jeep CJ
Frame should be ready for powder coating Monday. New tub, fenders, and radiator support is on the way. Have to replace a few body mount brackets, and smooth the frame. Will snap a stripped pic before powder coating.

I think I've got a chubby!

I've always loved the old CJs! I've had my share of them! Most were rust buckets though. I had a 78 CJ 5 that theyd pack bonds into during the week and it'd be laying in the driveway on the weekend! She was rotten from the drivers seat back!

nice!

looks like a 4.2?

T176?

twin stick Dana 300?

dana 44 wide trac. 86 went back to d44 rear.

had an 86 that I sold back to a guy that owned it when he was in college! regret selling just about every jeep...

Yes a 4.2, D44, and dual mode transfer case. Gotta upgrade the D30 in the front. Trying to talk customer into a D44 for the front.

Very cool. I am doing a cj5 78 right now and will be buying a 100% new steel tub, fenders, hood, tailgate next month.

I just finished everything underneath. Replaced everything except the frame.

Sounds nice. Look forward to pics! Let us see her!

I have an 83 cj-7 I am going to be pulling apart soon. Tub is gone and I am wondering about the frame integrity. What are your thoughts on frame repair versus replacing? I am keeping the 4.2 and not going crazy with it.

Most likely will be cheaper to replace it. Depends on how far gone it is.

Thank you for your valueable opinion and I see I have some options on a replacement. I will have way more money and time into this than it is worth, but I have had it since highschool and I can't let it go. Plus it has a Jasper motor with less than 10k on it and the rest of the drive train is in great condition.

That's the same situation as my customer. He drove it to high school, was his first ride etc. The sad part is he told me this Jeep will never see any off road time, what a shame. It's almost always cheaper to buy than build. When you build, you build it the way you want. When you buy, you buy what someone else built. Good luck on your new project. PM if I can help, be glad to.

Engine, transmission, transfer case, drive shafts, brake lines, parking brake cables, rear brakes are done. The messy lines laid on frame are fuel lines that haven't been run yet.

Is that a Weber carb? The 32/36 woke my motor up. Are there any other engine upgrades like a 4.0 head swap or anything?

I will buy you lunch for letting me visit your shop and promise to try not to steal anything.

Yes Weber carb. No other upgrades. I tried trust me. I couldn't even talk the customer into a D44 for the front. Come on over. Don't worry about stealing anything. Nothin of value here, plus stealing is punishable by death around here.

Looks like an awesome project.

A friend from when we lived in MA, mechanical engineer by day, builds his own jeep projects. He does custom D60 and D44 ales on the side for people he knows.
A labor of love for sure. Everything I know about basic part replacement I learned from him.
I also learned that you can order all the parts you need to build a custom Jeep from Quadratec. [emoji12]
Just need a Vin plate from a near junker. Ha!
If I get around to buying a new Jeep to build, I will have to consider bringing it to your shop if I decide not to do the mods myself, as I did on my 2010.

Thanks. Always for hire! Small jobs to doing it all.
My ideal scenario is being able to afford the following.
Start with a new base model Wrangled.
D60 front and rear
Atlas t- case
3.5" lift
Smitty front fenders and rear for high clearance
37x12.5 GY MT-K
And of course, the fool compliment of body armor and bumpers .
At some point drop in a 5.7L HEMI.
Not much. [emoji12] [emoji12] [emoji12]

No minigun. Sounds like your plan isn't complete. .

More inspiration to get in my garage and finish cleanup/setup so I can get my CJ in there to start working on it again.

I do have a question. How much metal work does a new tub take to get it to fit properly, if any?

@lowcountry It depends on who made the tub. The tub I used almost went straight on. I had to cut out a few body mounts on the frame and replace them due to the cancer. But that was unrelated to the tub install. I'm sure it helped by having a completely round spot to mount the body bushings and not oval shaped and bent like the originals were. Now it's off to get the tub ready for paint. Got about 75 hours of body work ahead of me. Get that garage cleaned out and start wrenching. Post pics too.

What brand do you recommend for replacement body parts? I am looking at having to replace everything body wise and was looking at a complete metal kit. I know fiberglass is cheaper but I can't bring myself to it.
