I’ve been waiting on William Forstchen’s latest book “48 Hours” to come out this week. I got it Tuesday and have made some good headway into it.

48 Hours https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07CGBNZK3/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_Fc0nCbEVG60ZC

This is a stand-alone story, not related to the One Second After series. It’s from the same genre though. This one is based on a natural EMP event from the sun.

I’m on chapter 4 and it’s every bit as good as One Second After in terms of writing and characters.

Definitely recommend it.

I'll order it tonight. Thanks!

Something about Forstchen's writing makes the story so vivid...maybe that's the sign of a good writer???

This book is making me anxious and walking around paranoid, making lists and "last minute" prepping in my head! Like I'm waiting for impending doom that is clearly developed in the first few chapters.

Good book!

Anyone want to lend it to me when you're done reading it? Promise to return it...

If you’re within arms reach of Mint Hill, sure. Otherwise the postage to/from would about equal what you can buy it for on amazon with free shipping.

It’s a sizeable book. Not heavy, but thick and much larger than a trade paperback.

I have read all the OSA set and day of wrath. liked them very much. I met him last year and he is a very interesting gent. he has many other books in other genres.
looks like I will have to get this one too

He described his latest book last year at Heritage Life Skills Festival... extinction level event that Big Gov is fully prepared for, but nothin' for the people... the plot came to him when he was visiting an underground storage facility. He's always a fan of us'n defeatin' Big Gov. I might put down what I'm readin' now, just ordered the Kindle version.

BTW, I think the author makes more on the digital copy than print!

And when that EMP/CME hits all the digital stuff will be GONE! o_O

Just finished the book tonight. Solid read. Every bit as believable as One Second After.

Check it out if you haven’t already put it on your reading list.

When that happens, you won't have to read it. You'll be living it. ;)

When the emergency is upon us, the time to prepare is over.

well, i read Once Second after. it was "ok", i guess.
definitely not Great....like The Road.
given that, will 48 Hours be better?

So, I'm reading this now. I've read all of his other stuff and enjoyed it.

I'm not typically one to get all worked up over incorrect/odd military stuff in books, movies, etc. BUT...he introduces 2 Navy SEAL characters early on in the novel...one is a Marine Gy Sgt and the other is a Colonel. I know, I know, folks from other branches can be SEAL qualified, but come on. At least one of your SEALS ought to actually be in the Navy (not the Dept. of the Navy, the NAVY).

It's been a few weeks since I finished the boo, but I'm not recalling this. You're not talking about the lead male character, are you? I'm not remembering a Seal in the story (let alone two of them). And I'm with you: nothing kills a story for me as badly as crappy military portrayal...like a broken-wristed salute.

I watched like three minutes of An Officer and a Gentleman the other day--there's a scene where Louis Gossett, Jr's character salutes with like a 45-degree wrist!!! And that movie was supposedly GOOD?!?! (I've never seen the whole thing)

Not a key character, at least not so far as I've read. Turns out it's the same dude (Gy Sgt --> mustang Colonel). Hospital roommate turned super-high placed spooky security guy that Darla calls for help on her convenient faraday caged super satellite cell phone.

I’m with you, I listened to the audiobook and was like wait what?!? Marine Gunny-Navy Seal-Colonel?!? That stuff really gets to me.

Can't wait to receive this one. I've been stuck in Clancy, Flynn, Thor land for a while now. I am looking forward to traveling back into Forstchen land.

I'm halfway through it and struggling to finish it. I have all the other books but this one is letting me down. Hope the second half is better than the first.

I forgot about him.

The book is different from the One Second After series—to state the obvious. I liked the change.

Since then, I’ve moved onto my first Clancy book, trying to read them in order. The Hunt for Red October has been great. It’s hard to not picture that asshat Alec Baldwin as Ryan! I’ve got Patriot Games waiting for me next. I’m really digging Clancy’s stuff. Wish I caught on sooner.

I think the best Clancy book, by far, is Red Storm Rising. It's not a Jack Ryan/John Clark book, so it doesn't fit with the series. But I still think it's his best work.

I read Hunt for Red October (for probably the 4th time) last week. Followed that up with Cardinal of the Kremlin. I put down Red Rabbit to read this Forstchen book.

For a lot of kids that didn't grow up during the Cold War, these books may seem a bit out of touch. But when first released, the tech and the specter of Soviet Union made for some great reading!

I like the Clancy book that explains how Mr. Clark got started doing his thing...

My hunch is Clancy did his homework, just like he did for our military geekdom. But I still wonder how much of the Soviet practices he got right. He gets pretty detailed with how they ran their subs, with the political officers, the launch protocols, length of cruises, etc. I;m thinking there wasn’t that much info publically available back when he wrote the book.

I wonder because I don’t want to think I’m getting a brief lesson in Soviet stuff when it’s actually all made up and pretend just for a good book.

Sounds like you're reading them in publication order. If you want the Jack Ryan time-line order, it's different. i.e., Patriot Games would come first, then Red Rabbit, then Red October, Cardinal.....I may be wrong on that particular order, but you get the drift

Damn. Read this over the weekend in 2 days. Not as good as One Second After, but still......damn.

The Marine SEAL thing made my eye twitch a little. But on the whole of it, if you read it and got from it the message the author intends you to get, you start to ask yourself some serious questions. Deep questions - the existential kind and of how deep is my Faith kind of questions.

Having read his other stuff, I knew how it was going to end. But damn. Just damn.

I think William Forstchen writes what he thinks Needs To Be Written, like it's his civic duty. I've heard him talk about how 48 hours was difficult to begin, until an idea came to him about how COG could be countered by the people. I give him a big thumbs up for making it into a readable book, even if it's not the best.

He is a Historian, after all. His fiction is all Doom and Disaster. He admits it, and says it's not the way he wants to be.

Always gotta have at least one seal in every book about anything even remotely military. If a fight breaks out: he wins every time. CUZ SEAL. Kids got taken? CALL A SEAL. Need a new driveway? SEAL. Need some information? Well, I know a retired SEAL who could probably help you! Need something impossible done? Yeah, you know who to call. SEALS SON. That mofo gonna come in hot from a HALO right thru yer front door.

Can't be a Ranger, can't be a Marine, can't just be a badass in the regular Army, can't just be a Sailor, gotta be a SEAL.
Don't know why this irritates me, but it does, lol. God, what a stupid rant. Meh. Please forgive me.

Just FYI, the way he describes SOSUS in that book was total BS. How do I know? I spent 10 years in the Navy as a SOSUS operator. I was a SOSUS operator when the book came out. We all laughed about it. Great book otherwise.
