A friend cleaned out a rental unit after the tenant left in a hurry... he gave me a military Otis 7.62/5.56 Cleaning Kit, and a carrier with two 7.62 APM2 plates inside. Looked 'em up and saw the plates sell for $300! Good Gawd, why was that abandoned with all the trash and dirty clothes?

Guess I'm a real prepper now!

Nice score! Are we going to start seeing you on future episodes of "Storage Wars", bidding on abandoned units? :)

I stopped by their house, and they were divvying up a bunch o' CDs... gave me a Country singer, I forgit who. Anyway, they had no idea they passed on the most valuable thing the tenant abandoned!

Need to verify the plates are still serviceable

Do you feel any soft spots along the face of the plates? Hear any crunching sounds? Are the edges firm or are there any broken parts?

And they're green, correct? What size?

Carrier was made in November, 2006.

One Plate is a bit dirty, but they both appear to be in good condition. There's no evidence that either has been struck with anything.

Here's the cleaning process for ESAPI plates according to the TM 10-8470-207-10

a. Remove loose dirt and
lint from the outer
surface of the ESAPI
using a cloth or soft
bristle brush. Never
use a stiff bristle brush.

b. Wet the ESAPI in a
sink or shower using
warm, not hot, water.

c. Apply a mild soap or
detergent to the soiled
areas and scrub with a
cloth or soft bristle
brush. Scrub only long
enough to remove soil.

d. Heavy grease/oil
stains may be pre-
spotted with a
detergent mixture and
scrubbed with a soft
brush.

e. Rinse the ESAPI with
warm water until all
suds are completely
gone.

f. Let the plate dry by
itself, away from heat
or open flame.

I would honestly just use a soft bristle brush and lightly dampen the bristles with cold water. Don't soak the plates, and scrub gently to loosen up that dirt. Let it air dry. The TM says don't put them in the washer or dryer FOR A REASON. Because some idiot tried to hit the easy button and likely destroyed the plates and a dryer

Here's the formal inspection per TM:

The ESAPI/ESBI insert must be
turned in if any of the following conditions are present:

Outer Cover is damaged exposing the ceramic tile material.

Plate is cracked and you hear loose
pieces rattling around when shaken.

Creaking or squeaking of ceramic tile
heard when plate twisted by hand.

Composite backing is delaminating (backing material plies are separating). this can be remedied with super glue if a MINOR separation is occurring

Cracking of the ceramic tile is felt or
heard as you firmly pinch the outer ½-inch
perimeter of the plate.

Plate has been hit by a bullet or fragment.

I can clean the mud with a soft bristle nylon brush... otherwise, these look unused.

The carrier needs some stitchin', an' a buckle replaced. I might be able to do that... ;)
