Found this little gem at a yard sale.....Astatic

Good info on the D-104. Many of us used them with our vintage tube radios for amateur radio aka Ham.

Those are awesome. The one I used to run had 5 momentary switches in the base for the “toys” as I knew them back then. A thousand watt linear and a 30’ Amtron with ground skirts made for some pretty annoyed neighbors and police around my house when I was in my teens!

Nice! Fair price?
Just saw your post. I got it CHEAP! Any idea of what a fair value would be? I’ll probably sell it since i ain’t got a base station, or anything else except 2 cans and a string. Oh, wife reminded me that we also have a blanket and a book of matches😁

Very cool and a quasi homage to Larry King. Just something about the style of what I sort of consider "art deco". I would have bought it for the simple style of it and wouldn't even have known what to do with it!

I have 2 of them, a tug-8 and a Silver Eagle. The plain jane one talks better.

Fun fact: These operate by having a rochelle salt crystal attached to a thin metal membrane. There's conductors attached to the salt crystal. When you speak, the metal membrane moves and applies pressure to the crystal. That generates a voltage proportional to the pressure created by your voice.

TUG-8 is the designation for the base. There's circuitry in certain models of the base that functions as an amp , but more importantly as an impedance matcher. The output from a crystal mic like this is WAY higher to begin with, than a dynamic mic. With my tube type transmitters, the plain , unmatched base varieties work great.

They're subject to degradation by heat and shock.

Astatic sure got their engineering development money out of that design :). They're great mics.
