So I would like to buy some frangible ammo for training with my AR at closer distances on steel. Anyone shoot steel with frangible ammo at say 30-40 yards? Is that too close? I have never shot any and don't want to kill my steel targets but would like to be able to shoot them closer than 100 yds

I'm interested in doing the same. Anybody load these?

I have a lot of 556NT1 and Iā€™ve done quite a bit of very close range steel shooting with it. Performed as it should and didnā€™t have any negative effect on my targets.

I shoot mostly american eagle and Tula 223 from Walmart at my steel targets at 7 yards to 300 yards and would feel ok at closer ranges. Iā€™ve also used xm193 through a few mags being it was all I had with me. I definitely use eye protection though. The targets are 3/8 ar500. It leaves a very small place on the target but is still pretty smooth after a couple 1000 rounds of at ar ammo. Not to mention that much more 9mm and a bit of 762x39.

Donā€™t know what kind of targets you have but have you tried shooting just one or two rounds at the target at close range just to see the effect? I was worried at first so I shot a couple rounds near the edge just to see what would happen. My targets set at a 30/40 degree angle so the fragments go down into the ground after hitting the target.

Hereā€™s a couple pics of the front of the most used target. The back is still in perfect condition, Iā€™ll flip it over and shoot it eventually. If yours doesnā€™t hold up you could always flip it as well.

Good luck @Zbizzle911

Wanted to add that a couple times I have had a small piece of projectile come back and hit my arm/leg. Just a very small prick that has a drop or so of blood so eye protection is a must.

I have 2 3/8ā€ ar500 and 1 1/2ā€ ar500. Theyā€™re at about a 75 degree angle but I could adjust that to take them more of an angle. I shoot a Lot if Tula but I wanted to use the frangible. Might just order a few boxes to see what itā€™s like.

33 cents a round for up close training is cheap, how much do they charge for shipping. Half the time these places have low priced ammo and bend you over for shipping

Iā€™m local to them so I pick it up. You can get an estimate from them after adding it to your cart

I went and checked shipping for me would've been $13-14 for ups ground or fed ex ground

Theyā€™re 38 miles from Mocksville. If you buy enough to make it worthwhile, you can just go pick it up. If it happens to be a Friday when we do our Joeā€™s BBQ lunch, you can join us. Joeā€™s is less than 10 minutes from Outdoor Limited.

What most of us like about Outdoor Limited is the wide assortment, prices that are usually as low as any (notwithstanding an occasional crazy deal elsewhere) and their inventory is online in real-time so there are never any backorders.

And if you canā€™t make it there when theyā€™re open, one of usā€™ll be glad to pick it up and hang onto it until you can get to HP. Not sure about the rest of us but I promise not to shoot any of it. :D
