Does anyone freeze dry for food preservation? What kind of equipment do you recommend and where do you get your supplies?
I'm considering doing this and thought I could get some insight from you guys.

Thanks in advance

We've looked into it. Found a freeze drier unit that is about $2k. I believe it was called Harvest Right. Lots of information on their website. Overall, I think it could easily pay for itself , especially if you grow raise your own food.

Thanks, I'm going to look into that. I'm planning on growing most of our vegetables next year so hopefully this will work out for us.
I'm still looking for a tiller for my tractor that's resonably priced, I can start getting a garden spot ready as soon as I find one.

I buy some things from " The Sausage Maker" company. I noticed in their latest catalog they have a new line of freeze dry machines. Looks tempting.

Getting ready to drop the funds myself. However, you need to vac seal your stuff after freeze drying if you want to keep it for a while. Don't want it sucking up ambient moisture.

I had astronaut ice cream once!! They said it was freeze dried, other than that I have never had it. What is the benefit over dehydration or canning?

It is a form of dehydration, but it's done at temperatures and through a process that removes the water using a vacuum at very low temperatures. Once it is then vacuum sealed in a bag, it should remain shelf stable for decades.

Harvest right is the big player yes. Besides that, I can’t recall finding anyone else that sells something like those. Especially for a reasonable price

We looked at getting the medium one, the one that’s like 2900 or 3200.

It’s just a tick smaller than a standard washing machine or dryer

That would allow us to pack whole meals if we ever decided to go camping or when back weather came and knocked out power. we would have more than just canned stuff to eat.
