Are you guys doing anything special to be sure your chest freezers are always working? I've heard of freezers failing and people losing the contents.

We had one to stop working a few years ago, but my wife happened to notice a partially thawed package very early and brought it to my attention. I bought another freezer and transferred everything over, well, what we thought was safe to keep.

Some contractors doing some work on an outside building, unplugged Dad's freezer (after he clearly told them which outlet to use) and he found out the hard way that his freezer wasn't working. He could smell the rotted meat while standing in the yard.

What steps have you taken to be sure you don't lose your meats and veggies? I've seen some of the high tech gadgets some of you use when you're using your smoker. Is there something like that for freezers?

I just pop mine open every couple days.
I also have a glass of water frozen with a quarter on top of it in there. If the quarter ever sinks ...

Me or my wife are in the main deep freezer usually once a day. I’ll notice if it stops working. The one in the garage with my wild game and fish, yeah if that one goes out I may not notice as I only go in that one about twice a week or so. Probably a good idea to check it more often now that I read this thread.

I don't process my own deer, so after spending what I did for two 100+ lb does to be cut into cube, burger, and 15lbs of "specialty" sweet Italian stuffed sausage for my Dad, I don't really want to lose that. Plus, I just dropped off a 170lb buck Saturday night and a 190lb buck this morning. I'm sure they won't be absolutely cheap to pick up.

Mine has a little orange light on the outside, but I'm certain that is only a main power indicator.

i dont know how tech saavy you ( i may have you confused with someone else on here who said they were an IT guy) - but the cheapest way would be a raspberry pi with a cheap sensor.

but for the money vs time youd save the amazon link that was posted would work better

I started a thread almost a year ago about this you might find helpful. There is a bluetooth gadget I purchased and still use. It works very well. I monitor mine through the garage door. I also have some frozen water bottles in the bottom to help keep things cold during a power outage.

Thanks!

I had been doing the water bottle and milk and juice jug thing for a while, but recently, those are being replaced with deer meat.

If you are going this route, look at the inovonics wireless sensor products to work with the PI.
