Fridge isn’t cooling. ~5 years old. Samsung side-by-side.

I normally mess with most of my stuff but I don’t have time right now. Anybody here near 28269 that does this kind of work? Hoping for a dispatch today or Monday morning.

I’ve called a dozen or more places so far and can’t get a commitment.

Not in the Trade, have you tried unplug it and let it sit an hour or so doors closed?
    Is freezer cooling or not?

Good luck getting parts. Samsung is the toughest to get parts for.

Try cleaning out the coils and hopefully it's just dirty.

    Freezer seems to be fine.

This set of Samsung appliances we bought about 5 years ago is just junk. I’m going to let one person try to fix it, and then it’ll just get replaced.

Haven’t done anything to it. Finally got a call back and they’ll be here 8a-10a tomorrow morning. $40 for diagnostic and that goes towards any repair. Good enough for me at this point. I called so many places and left voice mails I actually have no idea who called back and is showing up.

If the freezer is working I think there is a fan unit that transfers the cold air from the freezer to the fridge side. It's controlled by a thermostat.

Search the .net with the model number and see what turns up.

I fixed my ice maker doing just that. A $300 service bill turned into a $40 part and 15min of my time.

Yeah, I’ve fixed almost every appliance I own, several more than once. But with the holiday and then traveling for a couple days, I’ll pay the $40. Heck, at this point he may tell me exactly what the problem is, quote me a couple hundred bucks, then I decline it and order the parts to arrive when I get back Friday.

Everything is iced down in coolers for now.

If the freezer is working but the fridge is not, check to be sure the light in the fridge goes out when the door is closed. I had this happen with a brand new fridge years ago, bad switch. We all just assume when you close the door, the light goes out. Apparently the bulb cab create enough heat to overpower the cooling "to a degree".

There should be a vent near the top rear area of the freezer..... Behind the vent is a fan that pulls cold air from the evaporator. See if you can feel some type of cold air flow. If this checks out ok, then there should be a vent between the freezer-fridge wall, be sure it is open.

Wife says it’s also been making some noises, clunking loud enough it wakes her up. I could sleep with a train running through the house, so I haven’t noticed it.

I’ll check a couple of the things mentioned here, but it’ll still be worth the $40 for me to have somebody show up. Thanks for the ideas so far!!

So, if I show up around 7:45, butt crack in evidence, and pretend I know something about your fridge, you’ll pay me $40? :D

Just replace our fridge for the same reason. freezer worked but fridge was at 60 degrees. Making all kinds of noises. unplugged and defrosted. Same thing. Just bit the bullet and bought a new one. Had to cut cabinets off to get it in.

Not in Charlotte but Rogers appliances in Troutman has been very fair to me. I took my fridge in when it wouldn't defrost and he said it would take x dollars (can't remember how much) to check it out. He called me back and said the part needed was less than the check out fee so that was all I had to pay.

FWIW...this fridge is a dual coil system. He said something like <10% are designed that way? So the freezer side doesn’t cool the fridge side.

Initial guess is the defrost heater element on the fridge side is dead. Working on disassembly now.

...and upon further inspection, maybe not the heater. Maybe the drain somehow got clogged and all the ice is just around the fan. Gotta defrost everything and see how it goes.

Defrost cycle is controlled by computer chip which was what was bad on mine.

I've had to work on refrigerators before. Hopefully it will be something as simple as a defrost timer.

Supposedly the clogged drain (under the coil) caused all the problems. Fan seemed to function fine once all the ice around it was removed. 90 day warranty on the work done, which was really just diagnosing it, sitting there with a hair dryer to defrost everything, cleaning out the drain, and reassembly of everything. No parts replaced today. We’ll see how it goes over the next couple weeks/months.

FYI, I have a 8 year old Samsung fridge that does the same thing - the defrost cycle on the fridge side doesn’t do it’s job and the ice stops the fan. Sometimes you can hear the fan clipping the ice and know you’re a few days out from needing to defrost it. It’s apparently a widespread problem with Samsung fridges that they didn’t fix for years. I definitely wouldn’t buy one again.

Mine came back 3 or 4 times, I replaced the defrost sensors just in case and still had problems. Eventually I put better foam sealing strips around the panel that covers the fan to keep the colder more humid air out and moved the temperature/defrost cycle sensor to the location where the ice started forming. Its worked for a couple years so far.
Just something to stick in your brain if it comes back

Seems like I hear a clunk about once a night. No idea if that’s the issue or not. Haven’t noticed any visible ice buildup, yet. Thanks for the tips.

Might pick your brain on the mods sometime soon.

How long were you going between defrosting it?

It went a good amount of time between defrosting, 4-6 months if I’m remembering right.

Silmilar here. Drain clogged up which explained the occasional puddle of water near the fridge. Eventually it killed defroster. Enough ice built up that it clogged the air flowing over the evaporator. Anyway.....lesson learned for me.......about every 2 years, remove and blow out the drain tube.

My GE side by side will occasionally pool up ice on the bottomI ofothr freezer and get water on the floor. I take take the shelves out and chip the ice. Use warm water and a zip tire to clear the drain and good for the next interval. It's happened maybe three times in 10 years.

I've got a repair guy coming to look at my $800 dryer that's 2 yrs old tomorrow. For appliances like that, it's worth the 5 yr extended warranty for the extra $75 (or whatever it was) and 100% no touch by me.

What’s the dryer not doing? I have fixed mine twice and both times it was pretty easy to do.

Heating. I'm fairly sure it's the $35 element, but that's what the tech will figure out tomorrow for me.

My previous dryer had a computer board go out twice. The guy, seemingly knowledgeable, made a good point. He said dryers just have a hard life. Hot moist conditions and exposed to outside cold air so condensation kills electronics.

Nah, kept it in the laundry room. A new heater element and less than an hour and it was fixed. Been drying wet stuff since Wednesday.

I asked the tech (of 13 yrs) what brand I should buy next with his knowledge. He said the cheapest one and that they almost all had the same crappy guts, just different wrappers. And that at 5 yrs all would be better off discarded and replaced than repaired.

Go Lowe's and the 5 yr warranty!

I have a natural gas fired dryer, just like at the laundromat, soft and fluffy dry. Running since 1991, top of the line Kenmore with mechanical
timer, passed on the electronic top of the line that was $150 cheaper. Boards go obsolete, synchronous motors are inexpensive.
Only repair I did to it was replace the drum rollers and greased the bearings during install and a quick vac of the dust inside.

If your one year warranty is up, be sure to check with your credit card issuer,
many cards will double the standard warranty, they have to compete with American Express that offers this perk.

No natural gas on my street. I wish, I had a really high end stove (nib) offered for free when I bought the place and had to turn it down and go buy a new electric one.
