I have a 2011 Expedition XLT and last week it started having issues at the pump. Try to fill it up and the nozzle just clicks. Have to go insanely slow. I mean like it takes 20+ minutes to fill the tank and it constantly pops. Tank doesn't seem to be venting properly. Can't figure it out why though. Here's where I'm at:

-Dropped the tank. Followed the lines.

-I checked the vent line to the filler neck. Removed it, blew through it. It's clear.

-I disconnected all the lines to the charcoal canister. They're all clear and no signs of charcoal residue or anything.

-Hit the canister valve with 12v. It closes like it's supposed to and remains open without power.

-The one-way bungs on top of the tank both function fine. You can hear the pellet move and block the valve when you blow into them. Both seem to allow air out of the tank.

-The vacuum harness on top of the tank is clear of obstructions.

-The vent on the fuel pump assembly seems to be fine. (I didn't take the assembly out and check internally)

-Thinking it could still be a blockage in the charcoal canister or something north of the tank, I went to the gas station and popped the vacuum line to the tank vacuum harness off the canister and tried to fill it. Same result. Immediate clicking.

To sum up, I know it's something between the filler and the charcoal canister. Lines appear to be good. Unless I'm missing something it's got to be related to the tank or specifically one/some of the valves on the tank??? Going to drop the tank again in the morning and pull the fuel pump assembly and see what I can see.

What say you? What else should I look for?

I dont know how to test it but my friend had the same issue happen on his BMW. He needed to have the canister replaced.

problem with the station's nozzle maybe? how many did you try?

Just went through same in my Tundra and after everything you've mentioned and more, canister replacement fixed it.

Used to be a guy that hung around CSF that was a pretty good mec-can-nek.

GTownWrench??? Where are you?

I’m with the majority. Canister or canister vent.

I was away for awhile....guess I missed a lot of happenings.

I should let this joke play out for awhile but he changed his name to the first person that told you he was gone. Mike Overlay.

Never figured out why.

.......had a similar issue a while back. I could back the nozzle out slightly so it could vent. I did that for years until i got rid of the vehicle.

In my experiences, canister vent valve is not working properly.

I used a spare battery to actuate the vent valve. It opened and closed properly.

I also disconnected the vent line from the tank to the canister and even open on that end, it still backed up like there was a pressure build up.

You should have a Filler hose screen , is that clear ? ?
Check the Baffle on the Tank at the Filler hose ?

Don't know if it has a screen. Didn't occur to me to look inside the filler bung on the tank when it was down. I'm going to drop it again in the morning and check the filler hose and tank bung for any obstructions...

No baffle issue...

Perhaps you can use a bore scope camera to see if the filler is blocked as it attaches to the tank?

I had a Tahoe do this after a fuel pump was replaced. I pulled the tank and found the screen was in the filler hose sideways blocking the flow, where it attaches to the tank.

I also purposely caused this problem on a prankster coworkers service van. Crawl underneath, squeeze the section of hose from the filler to the tank and apply a zip-ty :D:D

One of the mods was a mechanic, and banned him cause he didn't like the competition. Somebody else told me he made several million in the fake airbag sensors & moved to Vegas to spend all those millions on hookers & blow.

Well it turns out it was the anti siphon valve on the tank spud. It was gummed up and wouldn't travel freely. I popped it into the tank and pulled the parts out through the pump mounting holes.

Takes fuel fine now...

Unfortunately, my dumbass self didn't orient the float properly or something and the sending unit is not working. Gonna have to drive a few hundred miles before I drop the tank again though...
