FVSR range trip

IMG_0769.JPG

That's the best group measured.
The table I was shooting from needs to be about a foot longer, half my buttstock was hanging off the table and every time I tried to load the bipod while balancing the rear bag I'd slip off.

Improvised the position to get as best as I could. Had a several 2 shot groups stacking well.

My issues today:

1: the bench was too short to properly get a good foundation and rest on.
2: the scope... mil reticle and MOA adjustment. Oh lord that that's a pain, it's a cheap scope, and does ok for the job, but I want a swfa SS to clone my other guns.

What ammo did you use? Notwithstanding the other issues you mention, finding the "right" ammo seems to be a big (if not the biggest) determining factor in a rimfire rifle's accuracy and consistency.

What all have you done to the Boyd's to fit the action and barrel ... bedding ... pillars? My Boyd's for my CZ came in and I had to open the channel up a little because it was touching in two small spots about 2" in front of the action.

What rest/bipod are you using? Are you using a rear squeeze bag

My Boyd's FVSR stock needed some major trial and error with action screw torque. Once I got it figured out, it's a tack driver.

I started off using a Harris knock off and rear bag. The bench was too short for that combo, so I used a solid support, and then working with the rear bag.

I haven't modified the Boyd's at all.

Welcome to the most difficult shooting sport out there, 22 LR bench rest.. It will drive you crazy if you let it.. It happened to me back a few years ago.
Here are some suggestions, your and others opinions will vary. I had the FVSR, its a great rifle. If anyone tells you that the CZ 452/455 is a lot better ? Ive had both, I think they shoot the same and proved it years ago.
Ammo selection is key, the CCI SV isn't going to print one hole or even close to it. The FVSR is capable, just needs better/expensive ammo.
Good solid rest, front and back is necessary, you already figured that out.

Here is the real problem if you are trying to shoot accurately with a 22LR with good ammo. The good ammo is slow velocity, this means that the bullet is still in the barrel during recoil. Any little difference in your hold/rest position/your trigger pull/your energy level will twitch that barrel just a little bit before the bullet exits, thus throwing the shot off.
Back when I used to compete in this sport, I was the second place guy. The winner was a Southern Baptist Preacher that would hit this target . at 50 yards about 4-5 shots more then I would during a 100 round string.
I suggest you think more about MOS/ Minute of Squirrel then MOA, will keep you sane.

I could not agree with this statement more. My FV-SR would out shoot my CZ 455 time in and time out! It was so much of a difference that I sold the CZ and haven't looked back!

@Lager I plan on trying out some match ammo after I get my Oculus out of jail. I also want to get a new scope, this is really my training rifle, I need to really get a mil with mil adjustment scope. Thinking about doing the SWFA SS 10x to match my 6.5grendel AR that should be here any day.

I have a Vortex Crossfire 2 on my Kidd 10/22. This scope I've had awhile does ok, but today it wasn't working with my brain measuring the POI in mil and making adjustments in MOA.

On the Boyd's stock check and make sure you have decent clearance in the rear channel area especially. If not dowel and sandpaper time. I would also pillar bed it ... the wood in Boyd's will give a little when you torque down the screws. Also get your notebook, pencil and torque screwdriver then head to the range. My CZs are all slightly different but are around 40in-lbs ... I would start by shooting three 5 shot groups at 1 in-lb increments and see what worked best ... kinda like bracketing your handloads.

Now the other variable ... ammo. I really like CCI Std Velocity and is does well for me in most rifles but there is always one type that works best in each. My long barrels seem to like Aquila Rifle Match and its velocity is pretty much spot on 1080ish for the longer ones but my BILs Ruger Charger w/ a 10" barrel also loves it more Han Aquila's Pistol Match ... again hit the range with paper and pencil along with different brands and types to see what works best. When you find that ammo buy it buy the case or two st a time and keep it in your closet flat on the floor where sun doesn't hit it and release the magic dust that makes it work so special ... well maybe not that far but once you find it try and keep it as much alike as possible. Heck, there are some guys who have been known to sort thru box to find the same lot numbers ... the clerks look at you like you have two heads but that is how crazy we can get. Dont even get me started on sorting even premium ammo by rim thickness.

As to bags, that is a big personal choice but when I really want solid holds I use a Caldwell Rock front and rear. Now for my bipod stuff the choice of rear bags gets even more muddy but I like a CrossTac squeeze bag for easier manipulation but it can be a little less solid if you move slightly.

Rimfire sucks because we can't roll our own so we have to go OCD on other stuff. But it's fun!

Certainly sounds like you know a whole lot more then I do about rifle scopes, I used to compete with my Mueller Target and it served me very well with its fine cross hairs and repeatable adjustments. There is a club here in Salisbury that is still hosting 50 yard rimfire comps and they are indoors with nice shooting benches if anyone is interested. They have two different rifle classes, unlimited and the sporter class. All rifles like the Savage, Ruger and the CZ are considered sporter rifles and dont compete with the high dollar unlimited's. Fun bunch of guys to shoot with and always willing to help out new shooters. here is a link if anyone is interested.

You will shoot at 50 round targets sheets, one shot per target. One target sheet with a break in-between,then another. The X is the size of this period point " .", the 10 ring measures 1/2 inch.
You will find with this game,Having to adjust for each target adds another level of marksmanship, shooting groups is a lot easier.
