With the failure to get an optic working on my sub2k, I'm thinking of going 9mm AR for my competition PCC. The must have features I'm looking for are:

1. 9mm using glock mags
2. last round bolt hold open
3. actual 16" rifle length (ie no bladed/braced pistols, not an SBR)
4. standard AR controls

Lots of people build them and get them running, but I don't want a project, I want a functional rifle right out of the gate that will use wolf/tula ammo just like my glock.

The local gun shop has a FX-9 that fits all my criteria, but I don't know much about them other than what I can read on the internet. Anyone have first hand experience?

PSA makes them... but in addition to being mostly unavailable as a rifle (lots of bladed pistols) they also lack feature #2. Rumors say they make one that does, but I couldn't find it. Maybe someone has one?

Angstadt Arms makes one as well, but its 3x the price of the FX-9 and I've not seen one in real life.

Any other options that fit the list that I'm not finding?

Pricey but AR controls... Sig mpx

Are you

Not wolf/tula compatible, based on what I have seen. Low power ammo + steel case + MPX= DNF.
Great point I only fire 147 grain ammo because it's normally suppressed so I didn't think about that.

Just build one. They are easy to dial in. Faxon or Ballistic Advantage barrel in a Brownells stripped upper, your choice of rail, and then whatever Glock mag lower you want. There are like a billion of them now.

FYI, I have one lower that works with a 4.5", 8.5" and 16" upper. No changes. Granted it's a CMMG colt pattern lower.

No first had experience with the FX-9. It is probably telling that I haven't seen any being used.

For detail #1 - do you really need LRBHO? I really thought I needed it, so I built mine around it. But once I started shooting it, I realized that in order to dial in the recoil you have to shorten the throw of the bolt, and therefore sacrifice LRBHO. I don't miss it at all. The stages usually force a reload anyway, and its quicker to do it on a closed bolt.

That said - Angstadt does make some good stuff. If I was buying one off the shelf, I'd pick up a Lead Star Arms. They are $$$, but the weight savings and fit/finish are top notch. The two that I have built were based off of the NFA upper/lower. One set is really nice and the other had a lot of slop. I think if you get the billet set, you will be good to go.
