I've always liked the older USA made Gerber knives and have a few I still carry from time to time. Just found out they're making the Gator with a 154CM drop point blade. Looks like it'd be a good all purpose hunting knife. I have been using carbon Moras the last several yrs for all of my skinning and processing but this looks interesting. Anyone have any experience with Gerber's version of 154CM? @thrillhill

I'll get ya one if ya want it, cheap at that. You can be the test case.

But, Gerber figured out how to ruin S30 when Benchmade and Spyderco made it into one of the most pleasurable steels I've ever sharpened, and I wouldn't hold out high hopes for their treatment of 154. I'll be happy to be wrong, but if I was a betting man, I would stick with Mora (grab a Robust model if you don't have one).

I do like the blade shape and profile. And I've always loved the grip/handles of the Gator series. But at this stage of my life, I use fixed blades for all my deer cleaning.

This is what I'm worried about...... Gerber isn't the knife it was in the 90's, unfortunately. I skinned and deboned two does this week with a Mora and after 3 minutes on the sticks it'll be popping hair again. That's hard to beat for a knife that's cheaper than a 12 pack of beer.
