I realize this is the wrong time to try and buy anything gun related, but I made an unfortunate discovery the other day. I have no AK mags! Ok, well I have the 3 5-round ones that came in the MAK-90 box, but that is it.

I bought a Bulgarian SLR-107UR years ago from Arsenal with the intention of doing a suppressed SBR project. I never got around to that unfortunately. I guess getting magazines was part of that process I didn't start.

So I have two AK rifles with no real mags for them. Which magazines are preferred for rifles like these?
Is there any chance on earth of finding them for a decent price in this market?

I won't even ask about getting ammo....

Ooph, that's a tough one. Usually I'd say pony up for the real deal steel surplus or Bulgarian ((10)) mags, but since it doesn't sound like an AK is anywhere near your ride or die/SHTF choice, then commercial mags should be adequate for range use or just to have.

Magpul PMAGs are still cheap and always reliable. If you want steel, there's the new(ish) Bulgarian production ribbed mags that are pretty stout. And I hate to say this, but the gen-3 South Korean SHK mags have been surprisingly solid for me so far. I would stay away from the first two gen KCI mags.

All of these are in stock at the various popular e-retailers and all are sub-$20.

I have a box of those steel korean mags put up somewhere, new never used. The ones I tested in my guns all worked with no issues. You can test drive a few if you can take the stank eye you’ll get from the AK snobs.

I have several of the Croatian ones that were floating around last year. They are known for the locking tabs being thick. All I have tried have worked in both my AKs

PM me

Thank you for the recommendations and quick education on some of the AK mags! Are any of these picky about the type (brand, case, etc.) of ammo you put in them?

Or you could just sell that mak that you have no mags or ammo for to somebody. :D:D:D
I'm not sure you will come back this way as I still don't know where to get good tacos up there! ;)
This sounds like a plan.

CDNN also has Tapco mags for like $9. They aren't pretty and wont earn you any likes on Instagram, but they work fine. I've never had a single problem with one. I even cut an old one down to make a benchrest mag, glued the baseplate back on with epoxy, and it's been working fine for years.

Oh no, there are AK snobs?! I was never one for style points, function over fashion! ;)

plus one for tapco’s. You May have to do a quick sand job on the sides to get them to fit in some rifles. They function great. Plus a lot lighter

Oh yeah, there are definitely AK snobs that will scoff at you for spending any less than $1500 on a rifle designed for peasants.

Rural King had gen 2 Korean steel mags for $9.99 last time I was in there.

In a world of $1,700 freakin' PSA AKs (Gunbroker), here's me snobbin' away on my high horse at you cheapskates and your lousy $1,400 WASRs...

@Exile_D - I just noticed that AK Options has US Palm mags for $13. Your choice - black or FDE. A few bucks cheaper than a lot of the other retailers. I have a few of these and they've been more than fine for range use so far: https://akoptionsllc.com/magazines/

cut the 5 round followers down about an inch, you'll instantly double your overall mag capacity.
