I got a wild hair a while back and made a set of grips for my Star. They turned out alright but I always wanted to try checkering. Recently a gunsmith in my area passed away and his stuff was auctioned off. I got his checkering tools and decided a new set of grips was in order.
This is what they started out as. A piece of black walnut I got from a customer of mine. A little work in the shop and this is the next step in the process.
Next step was to cut to rough shape and checker. It ain't pretty yet but I am getting there. I didn't think it was too bad for a first effort. There are mistakes that are easy to spot but I feel like I will get better with practice. The ones in the middle are the original grips that came on the gun.
And this is where the first set I made is currently residing and where the new ones will live if I like them enuff.
