You should be taking your skills to USPSA instead of grock newbz matches.

Heh.

GSSF is timed target shooting but without movement or reloads. It's great for improving accuracy and you can win a gun even if you don't win the match.

I haven't in years, but things are pretty much the same, I hear.
1. Own a Glock
2. Show up
3. Pay the fee
4. Follow the rules

It's a non-tactical shoot-reload-shoot for score competition. There are lots of prizes, and not just for the winners. It's a fun gig, but you won't leave any more tacti-cool than when you arrived.

OBTW, the next match "nearby" is Charleston SC in October. None in NC this year. :(

I've been shooting in these matches for about 10 years. They are usually very well organized and shooter friendly. There are three stages. You will shoot about 100 rounds. One of the stages are the steel plates and that has four strings. The other two stages are mostly 4 or 5 cardboard double taps. It's a difficult balance of speed versus accuracy. The very first match I shot in, my shooting time was under 60 seconds but I had about 250 seconds of penalty time so.... but I did win a pistol in the random drawing. They also have an armorer on-site whose service is free and will change out any worn or suspect Parts in your gun .downside is you have to join gssf 25 bucks a year

Where do you shoot them? I’d love to try these out but haven’t been able to find anything local. I’m in Fayetteville.

They have indoor and outdoor GSSF matches. The outdoor matches are the good ones that everyone talks about, the indoor ones don’t generally have prizes and the course of fire is pretty much slow fire for accuracy.
Here is the list of outdoor matches: http://www.gssfonline.com/match-info.cfm
Don’t be surprised to not find one too close, most people drive 3+ hours to the match and some further.

Each match has only a handful of paid Glock employees and everyone else is a volunteer. The quality of the volunteer range and staff can make a huge difference.

Thanks! I’ll check it out. So the indoor matches don’t give away Glocks, etc?

Unless it has changed very recently the winner in a indoor match gets a plaque, and things like shirts, hats and knives are given away randomly based on Lewis Class scoring.
They do them in sets of 3 so you shoot 3 matches on different days and your best 2 scores count. At the end of a series of 3 matches I think they give away one Glock pistol randomly, compared to a big outdoor match like Morganton, NC where they’ll give away dozen(s) of guns for performance and randomly.

Thanks! Very helpful. I almost went out of my way to participate in an indoor one a couple years back. Glad I didn't!

I’ve shot the match in Morganton the last 2 years. It doesn’t compare to IDPA (haven’t had a chance to try USPSA) but it’s still kinda fun. 3 stages, 10 shots per stage on 2 of them and 9 on the other.

I looked at last years match and it came out to roughly 5% of entries won a Glock and another 5% won money or a membership renewal. You can have up to 5 entries I think (each gun is an entry).

It’s very beginner friendly and a great way to see if you might like competition without having to worry about stage plans, gear, etc. There’s always a lot of newer shooters there and more women than I’ve ever seen at an IDPA match or range period.

I really enjoy them even though I’m not going to win. This year I just completely lost it on the plates. I shoot them at my club and usually end up around 4.3 or so from a draw. At the match there’s no drawing and I still somehow managed to clock a 10.6 plus a 10 second penalty for a missed plate lol. Even with that massive failure I was still able to see my progress from last year (my first match of any kind) and ended up around 35 seconds faster and placed solidly in the middle.
