Guess What I Have Here?? Can’t wait to cook them…

Where did you get these, if it's aight to ask?
I rolled down to the Morehead City, NC area today, to pick them up (gallon bag), as I have a buddy there that harvested them. They were harvested from the Core Sound area (only place to legally harvest, in season). I plan to head down next week with the skiff to harvest some myself. Snag a half bushel then go put a hurtin on some speckled trout and sheepshead lips!

For the scallops, the rules are tough and the harvest area limited. Just about need a lawyer to ride along and a good gos to stay in the harvest area. Even the days of the week and hours of the day you can harvest are regulated (can harvest M-Th only and btwn the hours of 730a-400p)

Do you need an accomplice?

Bacon wrapped and grilled!

My daughter said my scallops were the best she's ever had. Her husband decided to challenge me, and he came in 2nd.

Loved it!

I roll them around in a little olive oil, hit them with some salt, then onto a hot grill.

I flip them when they release on their own, and take them up the same way.

Set them on her plate with some melted butter nearby.

My heart swells watching her enjoy them, or is that the myocarditis?

Ha, wrong thread so I won’t answer that. Quick sear is all they take.

Man, they look great and after reading the post with the different ways to cook them, it’s made me hungry!!!

My buddy called dibs on this trip.. if I make a subsequent trip in the following weeks, I would be happy to have an accomplice.

Would offer for this trip but there is a 1/2 bushel per person limit but a vessel max of 1 bushel.

RECREATIONAL HARVEST LIMITS
It is unlawful for unlicensed (commercial) persons taking scallops for personal consumption to take or possess more than one half (1/2) bushel of scallops per person per day not to exceed one (1) bushel per vessel per day from public bottom for recreational purposes seven days a week (see A.4. above).

Curious how they are harvested?
To add a little more… they are generally in more shallow water. Sometimes you can literally reach down and grab them. Most of the time I use a net to catch them as they can swim away. They can really scoot pretty quick sometimes, which a lot of folks don’t realize.

Here’s a clip from Florida, in a bit deeper water (they are much more shallow here).

Thanks! I have to admit after your first answer I was still scratching my head haha.

Very interesting. Didn’t know any of that. Only shellfish hunting experience I have is clamming on the beach and diving for some abalone as a youth. That was very difficult and you had to pry them off the rock well underwater in the cold pacific.

Scallops look more attainable!

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmm......

I didn't realize scallops were that plentiful in NC. I have a clamming spot I hit off topsail island and after finding maybe 2-300 clams I might come across 2 scallops. They look great post a picture of them plated up for lunch!

In the late 90s I did a month of ADSW in the reserves (Active Duty for Special Work, short-time orders for special projects or unique manpower needs). We did a joint coast guard-navy-DEA task unit in the Caribbean aboard a CG boat doing drug operations, but 90% of the time was just diving and fishing. The scallops were HUGE, the size of tuna cans. They were so good. I love scallops.

Always a good story to tell! Those sound like sea scallops…. Delicious!!!

Be careful what you ask for….

Sautéed in EVOO and minced garlic… touch of salt and pepper.. then a tablespoon of butter at the end …. Over jasmine rice.

Recently caught and shucked NC Bay Scallops! Season is in and they are abundant! Planning to sauté some in garlic butter. Some will go in Alfredo and some will get sautéed up and out on rolls like a lobsta roll. Any other recipe suggestions?

I would never ever use it with Alfredo sauce. Spaghetti with lightly cooked scallops in garlic and tomato. Or Risotto... Or ceviche ;) 👍
do you want me cook any and show how to...?

All of these suggestions sound great! I totally forgot about ceviche! One of the purest and tastiest ways to prepare them. Would definitely be up for a lesson! FYI… I had to freeze the rest of the gallon, that I didn’t use. Still hoping make it down this upcoming week to try to get another batch of fresh scallops.
