Some fancy gun cases were linked a few days ago, and it inspired me to kinda get back to chipping away at the one I was hoping to make.

The hard case was gifted to me by my wife. It contained one of those E-collar dog training devices. It's real nice, Clark.

The top half has the egg carton foam in it. The bottom was cut specifically for the training devices, so it got ripped out.

Very little progress, but I did manage to get a piece of free foam cut down to at least fit inside the case. I had to cut all the egg cartony stuff away, then trimmed the thickness even further. Then, I cut the rough shape, and started dialing that in with a razor blade. Just working with what I've got.

The foam.

Fit to the case, shoddily. Had an oops at the near side of the handle, and it left a nice gap.

I intend to throw together a simple fixture/guide to help me cut the thickness in half, again. One half for a bottom, and the other for the pistol and accessory openings.

I'm okay with this, so far, as a first attempt, using what I have around the house.

You could put a magazine in that oops gap. 🤣.

Anyone else surprised this isn't a 5 gallon bucket with a lid!

If'n you need any more similar cases, I have at least a couple that need a home. I know one has the foam already in it.

I'm hoping to get a suppressed M&P 22 Compact and six mags in mine.

Yours looks good.
Thanks. It was a case from work that had some kind of heat gun in it. So I took it and added a harder foam to it we had at work.

The best gun case is one that doesn’t look like it contains a gun unless you want to impress your friends at the gun range.

I have been partial to Patriot Cases, made in Smithfield, NC. Started using these, after I got one with my Barnes Precision AR (standard issue). They seemed to work well and made in NC… works for me. I think they do custom cases by appointment, as well.

I'm not very serious about making or buying one, but I did have a genuine interest in seeing what it takes to make one.

Since everything was free (to me), I decided to take this cold and rainy day to finish it.

*gotta switch from tablet to phone...

A couple takeaways from this is, just like any other job, the right tools and materials would make a huge difference.

I should have used a harder foam, a longer blade, and stickier tape for the outline.

I rough cut the egg crate foam from my OP, then shaped it to the box (not without error), then used a piece of carbon fiber rod, cut in half, to cut the foam thickness to something that would fit and look better in the case. I also cut some polyboard to put under the foam. All glued with spray adhesive.

Polyboard.

"Slicing" the foam to thickness.

After much cutting and cussing.

I would say as a first attempt, it sucks and I'll probably not try something like this again, but...

I think it looks pretty good.

Thanks.

It'll definitely work, but it falls way short of some of the others I've seen showcased here.
Those others prolly wasn't their first attempt, maybe a few were but not most

Looks fine to me. I have cases with no foam, just put the pistol in a gun rug and put it in there with loose mags.

Looks good.

My first homemade pistol case (I actually still have it) was an old American Tourister hardshell briefcase. I just stuck a couple pieces of egg crate foam in it . I can get 4 pistols, couple of extra mags and sometimes a box or two of ammo in it

I always forget to bring the stapler or my spotting scope, so I use a Husky toolbox to store them. I used foam from PC server cartons.
