Anyone have hunting dogs? If so what kind and, what do you hunt with it? I have a cocker spaniel I'm training for bird and rabbit. I'll post a pick of my new pup in a few. Shes still young but is learning to fetch and to walk on my left side since I am a right handed shooter.

I raised and trained a couple labs way back in life. Was a lot of fun learning their personality and seeing the switch come on.
Not to mention their focus and able to handle them 100 +yards out.

I've trained several Labs for ducks, geese and upland birds. Unfortunately your Cocker has probably had the hunting instinct bred out, most have. They make good companion dogs but not hunting dogs.

If you're going to devote the time and effort I'd find a more suitable breed. And it won't matter which side the dog walks on since they should be in front of you, not beside you....

Thanks but that goes against everything I've been taught as far as were the dog should be taught to walk. Cocker's are still good flushing dogs. I first saw cocker's hunting on the outdoor channel. There are plenty of breeders, breeding good field dogs. She has a good prey drive so far with the rabbits.

My old cocker was real good and easily trained. I'm not saying your wrong but it's not always the case. Maybe come fall dove season and rabbit season, I can prove it to you.

If the dog is beside you how is it going to flush a bird in front of you??
It will flush on command. I want the dog beside me when I dont want it flushing. Do you train labs with penned birds an a whistle? I

I haven't had any bird dogs in a while.I used to do a lot of quail hunting. Dad and his hunting buddy always had English Pointers when I was a kid. I switched over to English Setters after I started hunting with a couple of guys that had some really nice setters. The setters are more of a "one man" dog than the big pointers were. There's nothing better than watching good bird dogs working cover.

I have two Brits that are both five years old that have settled down and made decent Grouse dogs. Now if we just had any grouse.
I take them a couple of times a year to a quail hunting preserve just so they ca get feathers in their mouths. They do love their job.
