Hi all, I wasn't sure where to post this question so please feel free to move it and scold me severely if this should go somewhere else.

I have a revolver that I am really wanting to trade, and am thinking about taking it up to the gun show in Columbia, SC next weekend. Do the dealers up there trade as a gun shop would, giving low value for the trade, or can I expect trades as we might conduct in private, $500 value = $500 value for instance? I've not been to a gun show in probably 20 years so don't know much about them.

Would I be better off initiating a trade here on the forums and not wasting my time at the gun show?

Any business that is in the habit of buying and selling has to make a profit. If the gun is worth $500 they will most likely offer you 30% less than that. Maybe even a little less.

They have to factor in profit and overhead. It’s no different than trading a car at a dealership.

Your best bet at getting the full value is by listing it on a site such as this with your interested trade items and trade value you expect.

And just like anything else how quickly you get an offer and how close to what you want will Edit* depend (how in the hell autocorrect made that dried I'll never know) on others interest in the item.

That's kinda what I figured, and I understand the reasoning behind the practice. Thanks so much for the information!

Lots of guys walk around the show with their rifle and a sign taped to the barrel, same for
handguns, they have a small sign taped to their shirt.

Unfortunately, this is what I expect each time I attend one nowadays. Forums, armslist, etc will all be better and easier (and cheaper to browse) without all the jerky and taser vendors.

As said above, your best bet is to take some good pictures and post it for sale here. You will get a better deal.

And still others tape up notes in the men’s room at gun shows...

“Wanna shoot? Call XXX-XXX-XXXX” ;)
