I'm pretty excited about this one. In addition to my fondness for Mac10's and other high quality firearms (!?) I really love walnut and steel 22's .

This one seems special. It's a Sears Ranger with a Unertl 4x scope. The Ranger is the same as the Stevens/Savage 416 and is a (very) heavy barrel 22 target/training rifle. What makes this extra special to me at least,is the J. Unertl 4x scope. The thing is a piece of art and I'm just blown away to own it.

I purposely didn't leave JoCo with enough money to do my checking account serious damage, but I had to pay the seller some cash to hold it, drive back to JoCo from the fairgrounds to get my checkbook and return to buy this.

Can anyone put a date on this?

John

PS: Happy to meet Cubrock and BudE at the show too!

Nice rifle and great find on the Unertl. It all looks in excellent condition. You just don't see many of the Unertl and Lyman scopes around anymore.

Very nice find. I love the Unertl scopes. I would guess in the $450 to $550 range. Wanted to put one on my Stevens 416 heavy barrel (US). But everything I came across that I liked was $600 or more. Just could not justify the cost for a trainer rifle.

I signed up for the Yahoo group that's formed around Unertl optics. It's really a shame that the records (SN vs date) were lost / discarded. While Mr Unertl was busy making sniper optics during WWII the SN on this one dates from the late world war II period to about 1945. Rifle is likely the same.

His scopes are so iconic, especially for the WWII era precision military shooters.

This where it pays to be ignorant. I would have walked right past that and saved hundreds, not knowing anything about the rifle or scope.

I would've done the same. "I don't need another 22."

I wish I knew more about what I was looking at when I go to shows.

great find, wish i had seen it also....
quite a few interesting rimfires there yesterday....

fellow with all the Krag rifles had a J stevens bolt action, did not pull it off of top rack.
there was a mauser 22 and a 521t in back of room.
saw a mossberg 44 us property marked, mossberg 146, a savage 19 NRA, a MAS 45, and H&R 151 leatherneck...

could not resist the 151, no pics so don't ask....old camera kaput.

I missed those! I'd have been tempted on several of those (especially the Savage 19 and the H&R) . Glad you brought one home!
