Please say Hello to Booger.

Done and ready. Old and had a slight bit of usage, so, fitted a new firing pin tip.....drill rod soldered in to the original carrier in the nose....colts firing pins are a touch too small.

colt hand and spring

colt locking bolt and trigger spring.

shortened barrel to a true 4" length

Army Jager steel cam cut ejector housing installed for a true 4" barrel with the retaining stud soldered into place and a locking nut made up from a broken ruger ejector tube screw.....full length ejector housing gives the shorter barrel a big revolver look in a compact/small package. … and the cylinder pin is fully dismountable without having to remove the entire ejector assembly.

Ruger crescent ejector rod and button is on the way, i'll install them next week.

fiber optic "try sight" in the new dovetail cut in the shortened barrel

11 degree target crown.

.002" cylinder bushing shim, perfect timing and great lock up.

time to sight it in and then pick a wide fiber optic front sight to completely fill the dovetail cut.

Nice. Real nice. I actually shoot the shorter barrel better, not waving it around as much.

I’d EDC that...I mean...I’d have to. It’s named after me...

I like the shorter barrels for two reasons. Ya can sit comfortable when carrying and yer spot on, they don't waive around or point down droopy like when holding them out.

This one had a few boogers, knocked em all off so I figgered booger was the right name.

the hammerli's are great, one of the best ever foreign colt clones, and fitted/finished as good or better than the colts of the same period. They even cost almost as much as a colt way back then. But now ya can get a Dakota or Virginian and shoot the hell out of it for same or less than a heavier bulkier ruger and without shooting the value right off a colt. Ruger might have made the SAA stronger but Colt made it elegant.

Richard, this thread has got me thinking about my Ruger Old Army. I think I will either modify it or sell it. I have a ,45 Colt conversion cylinder for it so I can shoot cartridges in addition to cap and ball. I mostly shoot .45 Colt in it; with a 7-1/2" barrel, it's a long, heavy thing. How would you like to take on a(nother) project? I'm thinking I'd enjoy it more with a shorter barrel. Equipped for cartridge shooting, it has a Belt Mountain base pin and quick-change cylinder conversion; the loading lever is removed. Here's how it looks in that configuration:

Now here's a ROA I found on the interweb with a considerably shortened barrel. Hmm... I am liking the looks of this:

Looks like a man's gun. Now this one still has a vestigial loading lever; as I envision it, mine would not - it would be a dedicated .45 cartridge gun configured as above, so you wouldn't have to mess with the loading lever. I normally don't like that big blocky front sight, but in this case I kind of like it. I don't know how the sight base is fixed to the barrel; soldered? Could you re-solder it to the shortened barrel without using enough heat to distort the barrel? Or maybe you'd have another idea. I like the smaller grip frame on this example too. Sound like something you'd want to work on?

Neat idea but I don't take on projects. Happy to lend advice though. If the bbl is thick enough I'd recommend screw mount a ruger ramp or Williams or even dovetail for a bbl sight.

I get it. I don't take on projects either - I got more of my own than I can finish. I'm going to think about this one and follow tours. Keep em coming.

Finished up with Booger. New taller front sight is on and fills the dovetail. brass is antiqued and its shot in! shoots great. I love it just the way it is …. now....DSCN5084.JPG DSCN5086.JPG DSCN5081.JPG

Back on the 10 yd line with full house 125s hitting a bit low with the new. 410 sight. 38s are right on. Next check is full house 158s which should also be close to dead on. Perfection!
