Handgun in VA

Can I keep a loaded handgun in my vehicle ( locked in glove compartment) while I'm in VA? I'm asking for a friend that's going there on vacation. They do not have a cwp. Thanks

It looks like if you have a CWP it is OK. Am I missing something here (or are you talking about the Mayor of Charlottesville)?

Law was changed recently to allow carry in a compartment without a permit. The compartment doesn't need to be locked either.

This is current law in VA IIRC. It is considered open carry.

As of July 1, 2010, a concealed handgun permit is not necessary when carrying a handgun while in a personal, private motor vehicle or vessel and such handgun is secured in a container or compartment in the vehicle or vessel. The term “secured” as used does not require the compartment to be locked. OAG opinion 11-111.
