I picked up a NEF SB1 shotgun receiver from @tractor_nc back in November. I had been wanting to try making a barrel for one. The SB1 can handle pistol and some lower pressure rifle calibers. I decided to make the barrel in 45LC. That gives me two power level of loads, standard and ruger only level. I ordered a gunsmith barrel blank from Green Mountain and started contouring it. Nothing special, just offset my tail stock and started cutting a tapper. After the barrel was where i wanted it, i started making the lug. It started life as a piece of 5/8 square stock of CRS. I got my measurements off of another handi rifle barrel. once the lug was made, i made the extractor. It was a piece of 1/4 X3 angle and i machined away everything that didnt look like an extractor. I also made the extractor cam.
Once i got everything made, i welded the lug to the barrel. As usual, one weld was great and the other one wasnt. It turned out that when i machined off the excess, it didnt look too bad. Once that was cleaned up, i fit the barrel to the action. It didnt take too long to get a good lock up and plenty of contact on the locking surface.
Whats left to do:
Make and attached the forend lug
Cut the chamber
Bluing
Sights will probably be another red dot.
I also cut 5/8X24 threads on the barrel. I am think about a Form 1 suppressor for it as the next project
