Hey everyone,

I currently reside in Natick, MA  but my family is considering making the move to NC :).

My wife and I are from Ohio originally and we moved to MA for college, and ended up staying there. Tons of obvious nonsense has always bothered me about MA, and I think we're finally making the move. Her parents retired to Wilmington, NC, we both have remote jobs, so nothing is really tying us to MA now.

We're looking forward to the lower cost of living, less nanny-state culture, and being closer to our family. As I said, still live in MA, but in early December we're taking a few days to meet with a realtor and barring my wife absolutely hating NC, I think we'll be moving to the Raleigh-Durham area.

Right now, we're thinking Cary (yes, I know the acronym), Apex, Holly Springs, or Wake Forest. Looking forward to meeting you all!

As far as firearms go, my current plan is to sell everything I have up here and buy new in NC. I feel strongly about keeping all of my pre-ban (94 and 2016) stuff in MA. I've built a couple of ARs, I have a low serial number Tavor that I baby, a Glock Gen4 (that I paid way too much for), my wonder Ruger 1911, and an over under shotgun I use for skeet and trap.

I really enjoy shooting sports, getting into USPSA and IDPA would be great after the move. I also am looking for range recommendations that would allow run and gun type drills - those are super hard to find in MA and I belong to one of the few, but it's always busy due to supply/demand issues.

Anyway, thanks and looking forward to joining you all in the Carolinas.

Happy to have you here. Greetings and welcome to CFF. Hope your escape plans from MA are successful!

Welcome! So why do you feel so strongly about leaving guns in MA? Just pay attention and you will find about anything you could ever want on this site.

Happy escaping...run fast, run far :)

Welcome to the forum. Kick off yer shoes, crack a beer, and enjoy the show!

Welcome! So why do you feel so strongly about leaving guns in MA? Just pay attention and you will find about anything you could ever want on this site.

The entire AWB and gun laws in MA are predicated on the fact that eventually all the scary guns will leave the state or need to be replaced. I don't know if I could ever do it justice if I tried to explain just how messed up the laws are up here. But, we still have the '94 AWB, so all of my AR mags over 10 rounds have to be from before then. Which means they need to be taken care of and refinished every so often.

My Glock Gen4 cannot be bought new from a dealer. In MA you can only buy Gen2 Glocks from dealers and they go for $600+. If you want something newer than that, you need to find a dealer willing to 4473 the frame to you, and then mail you slide and mags separately, they'll charge $750+. This is all because the Attorney General in MA maintains a secret list of guns that dealers can't transfer to non-LEO without risking her office suing them for violating consumer protection regulations. Now, this list isn't public, and dealers never know what's actually on it, but they all know that Glocks, and until very recently the Springfield XDs, are on it.

Also, until July of last year, you could buy AWB compliant ARs - just had to have 2 or less features, including pistol grip and detachable mag. So welded on muzzle brakes and preban or 10rd mags, no bayonet lugs or collapsible stocks and you were okay. In July of last year, the AG sent a letter to every FFL in the state saying that even the "compliant" ones are actually illegal and they cannot sell them in the state. Nor can they transfer them to non-LEO. That means that my previously compliant rifles are actually a felony possession charge, but she's "allowing" us to keep them this time.

I'm going to keep my guns in MA and sell them to my friends for as cheap as I can reasonably replace them in NC. So I'll sell my Glock to a friend for $500 or $600, take the loss on principle. That kind of thing.

Welcome to CFF!!

Welcome Wolf-man! Sounds like you're moving forward towards freedom - glad to have you comin' aboard.

I lived in MA 86-88, got a shock when I had to take a test and get a license in order to handle (let alone buy pins & loads for) a Ramset powder-actuated fastener...

Let us know when you've landed.

Doing a solid for all the buds you're leaving behind enemy lines. You'll fit in well down here. Welcome!

Yeah, I don't think most people down in the Carolinas realize how bad it is in MA - a spent shell casing is considered ammunition in MA. Ammunition without a license is a possession charge. A guy wearing one of those bullet belts with deactivated/fake rounds in it was arrested and dragged off the bus, charged with illegal and unlicensed possession of ammunition - a felony in MA.

Fellow MA escapee here. Left Lowell in 2008. Never looked back. We only go up to visit family.
You will love it down here. But the Triangle area is pretty much FULL LIBTARD. Thankfully state law prevents them from doing to gun rights what they all did back home before they invaded NC. A-holes quickly forget why they left the liberal northeast.
I know what you mean about MA laws. Particularly the predilection on the part of grand standing elected AG's and DA's to change the meaning of words so they can enforce their ideology rather than enforce the law as written.
Hacky made that AWB crap after my BIL temporarily transferred his hardware to me while his dui misdemeanor charge goes through the courts. MA actually forces people who have been charged, but not convicted of anything to surrender or transfer all of their firearms. The require a permit merely to possess a firearm in the home. Said permit can be revoked or suspended for just about any reason.
So now I have a nice SIG 716 and a (formerly) MA compliant M4 sitting in my gun room that my BIL can't get back until a Federal court smacks down Hacky. The MASJC won't over rule Hacky because they think the 2A only protects muskets and other tech that existed in 1789.

That is why I will never consent to a search if I ever get pulled over in MA while visiting family. There are probably a few spent brass that escaped my range bag in the back of my car. DC is the same way.
MA also has declared pepper spray to be ammunition and it requires a firearms carry permit yo purchase or possess. Supposedly this has changed but not all the cops know this.

Seems nobody thought to mention this important issue...

Be sure to leave all your MA compliant magazines up there. It is illegal to possess them here in NC.

:D

Hello from Raleigh, I escaped from LI NY in 1991.

Sure, you don't mind posting about the purchase of non-NC compliant magazines...you're in China where there's no extradition treaty!

:)

Welcome to the forum. Glad you finally got in. :D @Howland told us to be on the lookout for you.

Welcome Wolf.
While I really enjoyed a vacation to Boston two years ago, this state (NC) is flipping amazing! COME ON DOWN

Hope the move goes through for you. There are a bunch of shooting matches in this state, along with good ranges.

What I find interesting is that most of the Eastern European countries, formerly of the Warsaw Pact, are more free than quite a few of these United States...

Haha, like I said, we're from Ohio and both socially liberally, fiscally conservative... I don't care who you go to bed with, but you should have a job. My political views are not the norm in MA and if it's any consolation, my friend who lives in NH says I'm one of the few MA transplants he wants in his state. ;)

My wife is a little concerned about moving anywhere in the south that likes the confederate flag a little TOO much, and I know she won't have that problem in the triangle. I think it's a holdover from living in Ohio and MA - if someone flies the confederate flag in either of those northern states, let's just say they're usually not proud of their southern heritage... Hope that doesn't get me in trouble here.

... and you must own at least 1 suppressor ... a rimfire can is the gateway to more stamp collecting ;)

I've already picked out my first NFA purchase. :D

Planning to get a Z-5P (Turkish made MP5-k with tri-lug and threaded barrel sold as a pistol), get a can and SBR it.

Something like this:

Ha yeah, the grandstanding of the AG and state legislature is amazing. I don't know if you keep up with MA gun politics and laws at all, but these idiots were in such a hurry to pass a bump stock ban that they created a state constitutional crisis because they completely disregarded procedure rules in both state house and state senate, and then tied their bill to a budget that the governor needs to sign. Now they're scrambling to see what they can do to fix it.

Do it. I moved from the south shore a couple years ago. Better in every aspect.

Welcome!

Welcome. Escaped from long island ny last year and have never been happier. Missing family is the only drawback for me but the freedom I have enjoyed, the hospitality of most people down here, the yes mamms and yes sirs, the respect and southern traditions is what I am hoping to instill in my children. I do worry about the huge amount of northerners moving down here and voting the same as they did up there, then why move stay up there. Personally I moved south the embrace the SOUTH. I do not think youll regret the move.

I can trace my lineage on mom's side to Ireland. We be rowdy bunch. I got two great great grandfathers who fought in the war. You will see the flag displayed but not often. It is more of a heritage thing. I have seen the flag used for hate. Not something that I do.

Right and I totally understand seeing it in the South, but the people in the north that fly it aren't doing it for their "heritage". That's why she feels that way, she's rational though and it won't be an issue.
